So... sometimes people who are normally nice can really be full fledged assholes when around certain people. Its hard to know how much to speak up and out. What good will it do I wonder. So I stop with simply saying timidly that they shouldn't talk like they do and leave for a while to show my subtle dissaproval.

they weren't being assholes to me, firstly. Secondly, I didn't get "walked all over" in high school. At no time did I put up with the things which annoyed me.
