Revolving door etiquette

Popular culture paints them as quaint, or cute, or even fun! Buddy loved them.

I, however, can’t seem to figure them out. Our building has a revolving front door, BUT, it also offers two “regular” doors to each side, and I can bet you that 90+% of the people coming in or out use the normal doors ( Read more... )

As you can probably guess I'm of the same mind as Buddy when it comes to these.

But, but, but... would you RUN OVER said old lady with a cane in the pursuit of a few thrilling moments? I think no. So, then what do you do. If, however, it's some clueless lout on a cell phone, MOW THEM DOWN

I think I'd have to mow the old lady down... obviously if you're in a revolving door you are there to party.

I like how you stick to your first instincts, in ANY situation. :)

Oh yes those. I don't miss those. And remember the scene from The Walking Dead? Definitely dangerous even in the zombie apocalypse.

But it's perfectly acceptable to get in from the outside while someone is exiting from inside. It's also okay to get it the pod behind an elderly person and push slowly so they can navigate.

I think they exist for conservation but I'm not sure. And the people I. The lobby don't get hot/cold while they're being continuously used.

I find them as dangerous as escalators. Oh and did I mention, a friend encountered millenials at the downstairs of Whole Foods trying to figure out how to get in the store, one actually on the phone with the store, because the escalator from the parking garage wasn't working. They stared in amazement while friend walked up.

Also, it does seem I remember reading/hearing that the purpose was to keep the lobby (like in a hotel) warmer in cold parts of the country. NO excuse in Oregon.

Did this happen in Austin? They probably are the CEO of a major tech company here... your story made me laugh.

Energy conservation may be part of it (hot and cold), and another reason is traffic flow. Revolving doors are the traffic circles of doorways. It's easier to have continuous two-way traffic through a revolving door than through a conventional door because it's clearer which way you should be going -- widdershins (ccw). I think it would be a hoot to put a clockwise revolving door in and video the results. (I would guess all you would need to do is change the side of the glass that has the pushbar on it.) If you ever have the chance to see experienced people streaming in and out of a revolving door, it is faster. In low traffic times there is probably not much gain ( ... )

Not sure where the handicap access is, even in OUR building. But ours does allow using the regular swing open doors.

Surely one or more of your conventional swinging doors has a power assist button?

I think if you had more round abouts in your country you would be more open minded to Revolving doors ;). Plus don't you feel just a little bit of magic every time you get in one?

No, I feel a lot-a-bit of annoyance.

Ok, good. I'm reading this entire post thinking about how neat revolving doors are and surely I can't be the only one. I will 100% choose the revolving door over the conventional door any day of the week.

I hates them! They make me feel claustrophobic. Put on a jacket, lobby people!

Ha! that's my sister!
The building with the required revolving door has the actual lobby about 50 feet inside... they wouldn't feel the cold even IF it was cold outside (which it's not). Losers.
