Fifty Sentences About One Thing
01 Motion
Smoker won't ever admit it, but there's a quiet sort of pleasure in watching Ace move: easy, confident motions, always completely sure of himself regardless of whether he's doing something as ordinary as walking or slinking naked across the length of Smoker's bed.
02 Cool
Smoker tries to keep his cool when dealing with Ace; but somehow the brat's taunts always get to him, digging under his skin and causing his blood to run nearly as hot as Ace's flame.
03 Young
After figuring out their age difference, Ace can't help but tease Smoker about the fact that the same year the Marine was a full twenty years old, Ace was just turning eight and was still worried about cooties.
04 Last
Sometimes Ace will look at his baby brother and all he's accomplishing, all he's changing; and Ace will look at Smoker and see the way that Smoker, as much as he has superiors who bark orders at him, is carving his own path of justice down the Grand Line... and somehow in those fleeting moments Ace feels as if the tattoo on his back is a ball and chain, slowing him in the race of life and bringing him in dead last.
05 Wrong
In the hour before dawn breaks across the horizon, Smoker is awake, a pirate slumbering peacefully in his arms; something he never would have allowed a year ago, but every time Ace slinks into his room, it becomes harder and harder for Smoker to convince himself that this isn't right.
06 Gentle
He would never have thought of Smoker as a gentle man, but watching from a distance as the Marine speaks to his battle-wounded men, Ace can see the word applying just this once.
07 One
Smoker is the only person Ace has found who can survive and even match him, and Ace wonders for a time if that coincidence is the only reason for his visits, but it's not just his body protesting that notion and so Ace keeps finding his way back.
08 Thousand
Ever since Alabasta, Smoker has been feeling a persistent ache in the depths of his smoke, and while at first he barely noticed it, lately it's been growing worse to the point where it's nearly painful, and he has no idea how to alleviate it; what he doesn't know is that Fire-Fist Ace is feeling that same ache from a thousand miles away... and closing fast.
09 King
Everything changed when that little rubber fool became the Pirate King, but even Smoker can't deny that it was for the better... and every time Ace comes to see himso often now that the brat may as well move inneither of them has to fear repercussions from their affair any longer, and Smoker is grudgingly glad that Dragon stopped him all those years ago.
10 Learn
Ace is acutely aware of the muscular bulk of the man whose hard chest is pressed tight against his back, and of the way the Marine's large hands reach around and close over his own, guiding and correcting his inexperienced movements"It's a jitte, you idiot, not a baseball bat!"
11 Blur
Smoker hates the way that Ace, simply by existing, can blur what used to be a solid line between right and wrong.
12 Wait
It's been a month and a half since the little shit bothered him, and really, Smoker is relieved by Ace's absence; however, he gives the men an extra day of shore leave; paperwork needs to be done, after all, but he keeps one eye on the horizon.
13 Change
Before Ace and his idiot little brother, Smoker had never run across even a single pirate who didn't deserve to die; now, he wonders how the world is changing that he's met two in the same year, and what it says of things to come.
14 Command
Smoker is damned unwilling to take commands, even from his superiors, so it's aggravating the way he has to keep himself from complying the instant Ace sends him a sultry look and purrs at him to get on the bed.
15 Hold
Just as the sandy edge of the drop-off crumbles under his feet, sending him tumbling down toward the water, a strong hand closes around his wrist, holding tight.
16 Need
In his mind's eye, Smoker can still see the horror of the day beforepeople moaning and dying, bodies piled high, blood running like rainwater on the streetsand even after so many years of this work it still leaves his hands trembling faintly, but for a little while the feel of Ace's body and the scent of his skin and even just his presence banishes the images from Smoker's mind and gives him some kind of peace.
17 Vision
The way Smoker sees right and wrong has always been a little bit different and a little bit stronger than most people's convictions, so he's both disgusted and grimly amused when he realizes it's not the Marines but a certain freckled pirate boy who most often shares his sight.
18 Attention
Ace knows how to make an entrance when he walks into a room; knows how to get people to notice him, knows how to keep people interested; however, all Smoker has to do to get his attention is just simply be there, and that's all kinds of unfair.
19 Soul
People have always said that the eyes are the window to the soul, and Ace tends to believe that at least a little bit, because whenever he catches a glimpse of that rare warmth in Smoker's eyes, something inside of him jumps in response.
20 Picture
Photographs are moments frozen in time to remind us of the good things in our lives; and so although he forbids Tashigi from wielding a camera again when certain people are aboard, rather than destroy the picture of a laughing young man draping himself over Smoker's shoulders the Marine shoves it in a box at the bottom of a drawer.
21 Fool
Smoker tells him that he's a fool for seeking out the man's Marine ship on a regular basis; at one time, Ace would have agreed, but he's spent too much time with Smoker to believe that lie anymore.
22 Mad
Anger flares around Ace so often that he wonders how much of it is simply reflex, because nowadays the actual threats of capture only come when he's been away too long.
23 Child
Though Smoker would most likely have a coronary if Ace ever even suggested the idea, sometimes when Ace teases and prods the man enough he thinks he can see a glimpse of the way Smoker might have been when he was a young man, and in some ways it reminds Ace distinctly of himself.
24 Now
"You know, you need stop worrying about the future and focus on right now," Ace says loftily, and Smoker snarls, because that'd be a hell of a lot easier if the brat hadn't plopped himself down across from Smoker in the middle of a crowded restaurant.
25 Shadow
Every time Smoker thinks that Ace is actually more mature than he presents himself, the brat does something completely asinine; such as right now, using his fire to make rabbit-shaped shadow puppets dance across the wall.
26 Goodbye
Smoker had never said the word to him when he left all those other times, and its ongoing lack only became obvious when the Marine finally did tell him, and for now the wound is still too fresh for Ace to feel anything other than a mix of rage and sorrow every time he hears the word 'goodbye'.
27 Hide
Smoker greets this new island's taisa through clenched teeth; he hadn't expected the other man to have the audacity to board his damned ship without his permission, and is especially aggravated by the fact that he has to keep kicking under his desk to keep snores or snickers from emerging.
28 Fortune
Like his brother, Ace has always been incredibly lucky; and he tends to be of the mind that his fortune was what helped him to not only find his logia's counterpart, but also have that man be someone whose company he can enjoy.
29 Safe
There's something incredibly tempting in the way that no matter what he says to the Marine, he's safe; Smoker will never kill him for an insult or trivialize an offered truth, and half the reason Ace delights in taunting the man is because he can.
30 Ghost
Ace knows it's getting to be a problem when occasionally, when the time spent between visits drags on longer than expected, he'll light up a cigar just to have the scent of smoke and the soft grey whorls of it surrounding him.
31 Book
He'd never have pegged the brat for one to enjoy reading, so it comes as a shock to enter his room one night to find Ace sitting on his bed and reading by the light of flaming hair; it comes as even more of a surprise to be shushed and told to wait until the chapter is finished.
32 Eye
It's bruised purple-blue and swollen shut, and Ace glares at Smoker balefully through his one good eye; but considering it was only an instinctive response Smoker can hardly feel all that guilty, and it's Ace's fault for startling the hell out of him anyway.
33 Never
Ace is glad that his seventeen-year-old self can't see him now; he remembers vehemently proclaiming that he'd never get mixed up with the dreariness of the Marines.
34 Sing
Smoker has only one thing to say about this situation, and that is that certain pirate brats should never be allowed to get drunk if there is a chance of them trying to serenade Marine captains while inebriated.
35 Sudden
It's so out-of-the-blue that Smoker literally wakes up one early morning, glances down at dark eyes just beginning to flutter open and a mouth curving into a sleep-soft smile, and realizes that somewhere along the line the hunter was snared by the prey.
36 Stop
Smoker has told himself over and over again that this time he will put an end to the whole damn mess, but his intentions go awry as they always do the second Ace flickers into the room and a hot mouth presses urgently against his own.
37 Time
If there's one thing that Ace honestly cannot stand, it's the sound of a ticking clock; the sound always reminding him that they're running out of time and there's nothing he can do about it.
38 Wash
It's a running joke among Smoker's crew that their captain seems unaware that they know perfectly well why he insists on always washing his own sheets.
39 Torn
Ace likes to live for the moment, but even he knows that despite the fact that his loyalty and love are individually well-distributed, together they will clash; so he makes his way between three separate ships and tries to keep living for the moment, because it aches far too much to think of what the future might hold.
40 History
Once, when it was pitch-black and late and he was feeling daring, Ace laughed and told Smoker that they'd both go down in history, but separately; and from then on their affair would be their secret from time itself.
41 Power
Smoker is a strong man with a will tougher than steel, but somehow this pirate boy has gotten the captain wrapped around his finger, and every wicked little grin of Ace's tells Smoker that the brat knows exactly how much power he has.
42 Bother
He tells himself staunchly that with all the truly bloodthirsty pirates who need to be brought justice, he can't be bothered with capturing Portgas D. Ace at this moment; and certainly the sultry looks Ace is sending his way have nothing to do with that decision.
43 God
There's criminal activity and then there's blasphemy, but Ace wasn't raised with religion and he thinks he's just found his own anyway, and if he had a voice he'd be crying out in rapture, lost in the twining glory of smoke and fire high above the rooftops of Nanohana.
44 Wall
Over the course of his life, Smoker has built very formidable walls around himself; so it's utterly galling to realize that even though he was well-prepared to defend against Ace trying to break them down, the brat has eluded him once again by simply vaulting over the top and landing neatly inside.
45 Naked
Ace has the kind of self-confidence about his body that most people would kill for, but even that can't quell the flush that rises when Smoker's gaze rakes down his bared form and a gleam of appreciation flares in the man's eyes.
46 Drive
Every time he gives into his hateful weakness, he is driven further to the edge; the edge of what, he isn't sure, but he'll be damned if he doesn't drag the other down with him when he falls.
47 Harm
He threatens, snarls, scowls, and bellows; even swats the other about at times, but no matter what kind of vicious threat to the pirate's life he comes up with, Smoker hates the real truth of the matter: that the idea of actually causing the brat serious harm is sickening to him.
48 Precious
Unlike Smoker, Ace doesn't have a violent and possibly fatal allergy to emotional expression, but he's never thought of himself as a sentimental person; and so it's amusing to him that the extremely rare and fleeting event of the captain's smile can set his heart to pounding.
49 Hunger
The only raw emotion Smoker readily gives himself over into is anger, so when this unbridled hunger for the fiery pirate takes him over, he's taken off guard; as helpless as Ace to resist the heady call of his logia's perfect match.
50 Believe
Neither of them believe for a moment that they will have a happy ending; but Pandora managed to trap pesky little Hope inside the box, and sometimes, if you're a lucky person, that's enough to make it through.
