Here's some photos I took in the Philippines. I went there about 2 weeks ago to train graphic designers who are helping us out at my work. (My boss is Filipino) Broadband has really made the world a whole lot smaller...
These are little chariots attached to 250cc motorbikes - they act as taxis, and if you tip the driver he will race other bikes :)
Jeepnies! Thousands of Filipinos commute on these everyday. They are like Westbus if it were run by Asian hippies.
Here's a Walt Disney Jeepnie...
A Seattle Sonics one.. they love basketball.. I think.
I WANT A JEEPNIE!
Taking photos of these was like collecting matchbox cars.
This is the squatter area 200m down the road from where I stayed. Most of the huts are stone on a steep muddy incline - when its monsoon season it gets pretty messy.
Yup, a Hello Kitty crib. The Philippines has a strange mix of commercialistation and poverty.. There is a huge gap between the rich and the poor.
There was one small shop in the squatter area, and it sold candy...nothing nutricious to be seen.
...This is a house around the corner from Squattersville.
The shopping centres are gigantuously huge. Plazas within plazas, with lots of cheap clothes (Dickies jeans are 1200 Pesos - $28AUD!) Jolibee is a fast food outlet like McDonalds.
Lots and lots of goooood foooooood. The food court has about 10 of these type of restaraunts...all with their meals displayed as such.
This is only a glimpse of what I saw and experienced. It was like stepping into an entirely different world . I was treated like a king and was called 'sir'. I would wake up and breakfast would be cooked by the maid, followed by lunch and dinner throughout the day...and finally I had the pleasure of 3 massages, all with happy endings ;)
