[it's well passed four in the morning when the door to 4-2 creaks open, hushed motions given to normally-loud doors (as everything in the room tends to be, whether having come or gone)]
[creeping around is no difficult feat for a boy who spent years in the Darkness; he and his shadow blend into it seamlessly to find a slumbering familiar body]
[his sword, he knows, is nearby, and he settles at the foot of his bed -- within that stillness, he calls out, quiet and stern;]
[for a while there is only that quiet stillness, disturbed by a single calling but settling, settling back into a peace of warm air and snuffled half snores]
[eventually, though, the darkness seems to stir. in one corner of the room, the corner where sheathed blade rests against the meeting of walls, a wakefulness cuts the slumber - Riku's no longer the only one wide-eyed and bushy tailed in amongst all the off-beat quaintness]
[the nue appears from nowhere in particular (but from behind him, always behind, secrets to keep calm to maintain) all glowing eyes and steady tread and makes itself known by stepping over the sleeping might-as-well-be-corpse of its master, heading silently out into the living room]
[the tail chimes in with a flick of a forked tongue nearby an ear as it passes; come on, kid, follow on follow on]
[he vaguely recalls stories about the temptations of serpents, where following in their sand-bellied tread might lead them to the oasis, but starving and drenchless in a desert was the better way to die]
[he's been thinking about death a lot lately, it seems, only again when he casts a glance away from the great beast and back to its owner, that body tucked and thin inside sheets]
[he ignores superstition, as he always has, favoring the fantastic wonders of reality far greater, pulling himself out onto the shared couch in the living space]
[...the absence of Katsura's scent, he notices almost belatedly, and where he's laying that night is no great mystery to the boy, but also no great concern]
Hey.
[he speaks to some great sword spirit like he would any other refugee of Thor -- though perhaps with a slightly more respectful edge]
[the beast takes to the floor, slumped heavily on the carpet. they are as their master is (for better or for worse); as old and as young as he, as tired and restless as he. there is only so far they can push, so far they can separate]
[the ape seems weary, great limbs sagging into itself where it settles]
[the snake, alert, rears high above that resting body, twined in the air with eyes sharply focused on the boy who called them out]
A little curiossssity every now an' then ain't ssssso bad.
