Ideas please!

Dec 18, 2010 09:12

I need gift ideas for my mum. Poor thing is getting her hip replaced two days before Christmas and will likely be spending Christmas Day in hospital. She'll then have very limited mobility for about six weeks. So, give me ideas please! Likes: science, gardening, her grandson.

Help!

She has a laptop, right? If I were on bedrest, I'd want this:

Otherwise, books, right? movies? dvd player? A nice hardbound copy of the latest copy of Science, with all her articles in?

Does she get remotely craftsy? Would she want to keep her hands busy with a garden-themed embroidery project, or knitting or such?

Books tend to be difficult, as she spends so much tome in airports and tends to buy whatever interests her. Knitting is actually a great idea - she used to knit a lot, but hasn't for a long time. No reason she can't resume, right?

One of those big lovely books on historical gardens/gardening, not the kind found in airports? Yarn-wise, I am in love with malabrigo products at the moment. Nice to work with, and the kettle-dyed colors are beautiful.

Along the lines of your first item, I was thinking of getting her a bell with which to summon the help. ;-)

Hmm, the traditionalist in me says, "no!" But she's a very minimalist traveler, so it might actually be pretty useful. Do you know how extensive the range of books is? I seem to recall there was some Aussie-specific ereader issue. Will have to investigate. Thanks!

I seont a whole lot of time trying to figure which has more books, Kidle or Nook, and came to no firm conclusion. W/Nook you can borrow ebooks from libraries--not so w/Kindle.

Do you know if one is more idiot-proof than the other?

Not the same thing, but my mom had her knee replaced about 5 years ago and while it was a tough recovery, it has been AWESOME. She had literally been unabele to talk a block and now she can hike.

That's what we're hoping for! She'll need to get the other hip done as soon as she's recovered from this one, so it's going to be a long year. But hopefully worthwhile in the end!

I got a Kindle for my birthday and I use it on predominantly for travel because carrying all those big heavy books is a pain. For the traditionalist in me, I still visit the library for good old hardcovers.
