Name That Plant

Found a couple of these in our garden. We have no idea what they are. They do not resemble any sort of fruit or vegetable that we planted. Can you figure it out?

squash of some sort, based on the vine & the flower behind your thumb.

I'm not 100% certain that the flower in the picture is from the same vine as the plant in question. I was careful to find a leaf that definitely is. We've got butternut squash growing in that bed and it's completely muddled together with the mystery plant, some beans, dill and a tomato plant. I agree that the leaf looks like a squash leaf--it's nearly identical to the butternut--but the fruit of the plant looks so melon-y to me.

I'm going to look it up with this when I get a chance: www.mountainnature.com

I'm 99 44/100% sure that that leaf is from a butternut squash, and so is the flower behind it. Take a look at the first two pictures here. I'm thinking you just didn't get the variety of butternut that you expected.

We already have 10+ butternut squash that look exactly like butternut squash. Maybe there was some cross-pollination?

I looked at the fruit today and it's starting to get a texture/pattern that makes me think it might be cantaloupe.

It sure could be cantaloupe. I had to go Googling for this one, since I've never planted any, but it kind of looks like the varietal on the right: http://pubs.caes.uga.edu/caespubs/pubcd/B1179/B1179.htm

And it turns out that the leaf is right: http://images.flowers.vg/1024x768/cantaloupe_leaf.jpg
