I feel that forgiveness is actually counter-productive without true understanding, regret, AND atonement on the part of the transgressor. It actually emboldens them. This comes from an entire childhood of watching an abusive drunk be forgiven over and over without ever having to face any real consequences. All the forgiveness did was reinforce that he could get away with what he was doing with no long term consequences.

There a reason all the truly successful recovering alcoholics have a "rock bottom" point when friends and family finally stop forgiving and the consequences of their actions finally catch up to them.

Oh, and I think there are plenty of actions that are truly unforgivable.

Child abuse, rape, murder. Any action where you permanently ruin someone else's life, you don't ever get forgiveness for. If the victims have to deal with the consequences of someone's actions on a daily basis for the rest of their lives, I don't know why that someone think they shouldn't.
