GensokyoPhysical Appearance: (Canon artwork is notoriously hideous so I shall speak in prose!)
Nitori is…not a particularly tall person, even though she is humanoid in stature. Easy to mistake for a large child or some sort of aquatic hobbit, the kappa doesn’t really mind-easier to duck into small hiding places and avoid such pesky obstacles as door frames that way.
She has blue hair tied back into twin tails out of the way, and similarly blue eyes that glow faintly in dark conditions. In addition to her backpack (green), her dress (a somewhat lighter shade of blue) is covered with pockets containing tools of all kinds. The kappa also wears boots on land, though she tends to take them off if she’s swimming for any great distance. There is a key suspended between two black threads on her chest, though a key to what she hasn’t really told anyone. It could…just be for decoration. Nitori also wears a somewhat odd green hat which she refuses to take off. Ever. It’s a personal problem.
Spoiler: Nitori doesn’t have a bald spot. And, for a kappa, this is exceedingly embarrassing…if rather weird to practically everyone else.
Coincidentally, green and blue are the last visible colors to persist unaided to 200 feet and deeper. Underwater, mind you. Nitori is pretty well camouflaged when she’s swimming around, and that’s without any optical fudgery.
Personality: Nitori is something of an oddball. When presented with some strange and usually manmade technology, she has the urge to take it apart to see how the thing works (she’ll put it back together again, though!). However, when presented with an actual human, she has the same nearly irresistible impulse to hide--a long-ingrained behavior that might as well be part of her race.
The kappa consider humans to be friends, unlike many youkai. Nitori is no different, and is decidedly non-hostile towards them. She only means the best, really!
Even when she throws a billion dodgeballs made of water at you!
…Nitori has a strange way of expressing herself, yes. When dealing with or even talking to humans, she seems at a loss as to what, exactly, she should be doing; her speech becomes awkward and often changes tones completely. Quite like the kappa was trying to figure out what worked and what didn’t-which is probably exactly what she’s doing.
Around most nonhumans, though, she seems more comfortable. A bit. Nitori is still somewhat wary around them, but at least her speech patterns don’t change at random.
Any willingness to talk shop is sufficient to snag her interest, though-and even about things she has no idea about, she can usually make an educated guess. The kappa is a quick learner and an eager student-and a bit naïve when it comes to things or concepts she’s never seen or heard of. She’s happy to work to exhaustion on her latest project, too. Unlike many who follow the path of science, she doesn’t mind combining magic with technology, and frequently makes use of both.
Nitori also likes cucumbers. Yes, she is aware they look phallic. Please stop bringing that up, it’s getting annoying and does not win any points.
Abilities and Skills: First and foremost, Nitori is an excellent swimmer. She can outpace fish if she wants to, and is more comfortable in water than on land. She can breathe water or air, but not both at once; her lungs get confused and she ends up spitting bubbles. Or choking. Very undignified.
The kappa is stronger than most humans, but not to the often absurd degree other youkai demonstrate. Wounds that would ordinarily be quite lethal can be healed in a matter of months; minor injuries, such as getting her hand mangled by some gears, regenerate in a day.
As long as Nitori keeps her head, anyway. If important bits of her brain go kaput, she’s dead, Jim.
Her eyes are faintly bioluminescent, and glow in dark conditions without blinding her, allowing the kappa to see a limited amount in total darkness. Most useful in underwater caves and deep water in general, though having glowing peepers makes it a bit hard to be sneaky unassisted.
As an engineer, what Nitori sometimes lacks in knowledge she can make up for in skill. And a guess or seven. A fastidious attention to detail and precision means that almost everything she takes apart gets numbered, labeled, and then put back together with great care, minimizing any damage. The kappa also has access to several innovations carried on her person-the most significant of which is an optical camouflage unit. Nitori can stay cloaked best underwater, with some kind of cover or when standing very still, though the sharp-eyed may still pick out something that shouldn’t necessarily be there.
Oh. Yeah, she can fly.
…granted, not very fast, but it’s quicker than running somewhere. She’d rather be swimming, but that’s not always an option.
