Update

Many thanks for all the kind messages following my last post back in March. The operation went well and I was on iv antibiotics in the hospital for two weeks. This was followed by six weeks of three different, high dose oral antibiotics at home and as you can probably imagine this leaves you feeling pretty rough. I am now finished with those and ( Read more... )

Good heavens, have you been in and out of hospital since March? You poor soul! It's dreadful that this happened, something I dreaded myself as a person with joint replacements, but hang in there, Not Alone. "There's light at the end of the tunnel, they say--and there will be. :) :)

Hi Mechtild, so nice to hear from you. It was actually last September when I first had to go into hospital. That was with the original infection. Little, did I realise what it would lead to!! I didn't know you'd had joint replacements, I do hope you've found them beneficial. xx

What a time you've been having! They always warn us people having joint replacements of the danger of infection, always a scary idea, yet a successful experience makes infection seem a remote possibility--and it really isn't. I've had a hip and both knees replaced in the last five years. My husband had a hip replaced a week ago. So far, although my recoveries took longer than my husband's (who at one week out is like me at four!), the replaced joints have been a great blessing. I'd have been using a walker to get about by 2014 had it not been for these surgeries. I inherited my mom's osteoarthritis--not her fault, but that's heredity (I got part of her good looks, too!). But her untreated arthritis made her a crippled shut-in the last decade of her life, living in a state of constant mild to sever pain, even with narcotic pain killers. I didn't want to travel that road, so I opted for surgical treatment ( ... )

It's so true Mechtild, despite the warnings we don't really believe infection can happen to us when we're back home and feeling better. Usually it doesn't of course but all this was the result of an ulcer on my lower leg which was taking forever to heal. ironically it had appeared to be finally healed when this happened - but not quite, obviously!

I'm so glad that you and your husband are feeling the benefits of your various ops. Arthritis is such a scourge but we are lucky to live in an age when something can be done to relieve the pain unlike previous generations who just had to suffer.

Thank you again for your very kind words. xx

Gosh, am I glad to see you here!
Sounds like you had a really rough time of it. High dosages of antibiotics really do make you feel bad.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed the tests come out positive (or rather, negative) and that the new hip can be put in soon.
Thanks so much for the update. Hang in there!
