For quite a while (like maybe the past year!) I'd had this problem with the computer here at home: every so often, with increasing frequency, it would abruptly shut off while I was using it. Yeah, that sounds like HD doing lots of retries... but why not just clone the old drive to the new drive? then life goes on as before.

i think we've tried that before, but it's never worked. Either we have super bad luck choosing technicians who don' know what they're doing (*cough* ex-stepson-in law *cough*) or the Hard Drive is too far gone by the time we try....

Well, you can always send it to me... I've had pretty good luck cloning and peeling data off pretty much any drive that's still recognized. Just got someone's data off a 25 year old Mac HD. (Nothing recognizing which ancient oddball SCSI adapter it would speak to couldn't fix.)

And yeah, there are a LOT of so-called techs out there who pretty much know how to find the ON switch, if you show them where the wall outlet is first. I know a "certified" graduate with a "technical degree" who I wouldn't let near a DEAD computer...
