The key is cardio, getting that heart rate up. If you can figure out a way to get in a good half hour a day, I think you'll start seeing improvement really quickly. Jumping jacks, running in place ... just figure out some way to move and keep doing it every day.
soda is probably key. do you eat kind of regularly throughout the day? that is usually helpful in staving off hunger and the subsequent overeating. also, it's kind of a bummer, but replace as much fatty fun foods with vegetables and fruit as you can handle. you'll be pooping like a rock star and so tired of chewing you won't eat as much junk food.
also, i feel like i just saw a picture of you on facebook not that long ago and you weren't fat.
I am heavier than I look. About a year ago I weighed just over 200 pounds, and I certainly haven't slimmed down since then. I think I wear my weight in a weird way. Regardless, I know that I'm not happy with my body.
I quit dairy and refined sugar and lost about 8% of my body weight. Try that!
But in more seriousness, quitting soda is hard when it is part of your daily routine. Maybe you can try it out temporarily: no soda for 2 weeks. Knowing that it is only a temporary commitment might make it easier than a decision to Never Drink Soda Again. The less sugar I consume the less I crave it, so after being off the Dew for a couple weeks, I don't even miss it. I haven't had it in over a month, which is a personal record. You can beat the soda demon!
My problem with Soda is that I am either off of it completely or it's got it's hooks in me full force. I get to a point where I'm drinking soda and not even enjoying it. I'm not sure if it's actually an addiction or if it's just a habit.
There is also a weird social element to my soda problem. People know I drink soda, and various polite people in my life have made a point of providing it to me. For example, last time I tried to quit back in the spring, I spent a whole day at my drummer's house while working on the record, and he had bought soda just for me. I had to drink it! Also, when my parents are around (like later today), the soda is plentiful. It's also often offered to me on occasions when everyone else is drinking alcohol. At times, again, it's provided by the hose specifically for my benefit. Man, reading this back makes me realize how thoughtful my friends are!
You do have thoughtful friends! I bet they are so thoughtful even, that if you mention to them that you are trying to quit soda, they will start giving you juice, or bottled water.
Also though, if you make a rule of only drinking soda if someone else bought it for you, your soda intake will probably be pretty negligible.
I actually drank a can of soda today that my parents offered me. It was okay, because I really couldn't stand to drink even half of it. There might be something to the fact that it was cola from a can. I can put away 32 oz of fountain soda through a straw like nobody's business, but drinking production cola from a can is a chore that makes me feel like ass.
