The shuttle showing inside the checks, is because you've changed the tablet-threading direction. You'll notice in the center row of blue checks, you don't get those white dots - only in the side rows. There are probably actually white dots in the middle of the white checks - but you don't see them because they're white. You see the weft when the tablets are back-to-back and you reverse the turning direction.

For what you are describing, I think you're going to need to warp all in one direction, and use fine threads - you'll have to make a more complicated turning pattern (something like 2f/2b/4F/4B/2F/2B, but I'm just guessing) to get big wide checks in fine threads.

If you want checks, and not lozenges, you will need to use some variant of double face, and the weft colour will show up on a regular basis. There's not much you can do about that except use a looser tension, beat like crazy, use wool for your thread, and full it when you're done weaving.

And let me comment on more time. There's one way you can do it, using smaller checks.

Thread the cards in (probably) pairs:

1) A B white C D blue
2) A B blue C D white

(Alternate the direction of twist from card to card.)

Then just turn forward repeated. Smaller squares, and they'll look a little pointy because of the twining, but ...

So pretty, I especially like your AnTir checky.
hummm, we still haven't done a trade yet have we? If you are still interested, what kind of pottery would you like to trade for?

thanks! Those are inkle woven trims on the bottom.

I'd love to do a trade with you! I'm Norse and love the style of their pottery and have been really thinking I'd like to get a smallish (~1L) jug... will you be at KAS? Wanna chat then?

I would love to chat.
There are no merchants at KA&S this year so I will be around looking for trouble. A good time to talk, and I can always bring something with me too.

The ragged end and the weft showing are a consequence of the technique. You could try threading your cards so that turning all one direction *might* help, but you'll get small checks, as hlwoods said. Inkle might very well be your best bet. I wish I had better advice to offer.
