the sekrit project...

'cause really, can anyone tell justgemma17 no??

I've never done a whole banner before!!!

Gemma asked me a few weeks ago if I'd be able to do a charter banner for her Cadet, Warwick Drakkar, who was being made a White Scarf this past weekend. This is the biggest silk painting project I've taken on and I learned alot from it...

hey look... I made a frame! I? do not win at miter joints... I do however win at purchasing appropraite hardward and, while not pretty, the frame is sturdy and functional...

and it's started!!! The white parts were covered with presist to protect them before painting... however there is a bit of black in the yellow... and a bit of blue bled through the presist in the Tir Righ Star... no where near as bad as it looks in the pic!

close up of the White Scarf badge (the presist looks beige-y but washes out like a dream so the white is lovely, snowy white!)

and because I'm a dork I didn't get a picture of it all done... so here's one from court.

so across the banner is the An Tir black band with checky, Tir Righ Populace Badge, White Scarf Badge, Warwick's Arms, and Tiernan's triskele and Miranda's shamrock. The decision to use their badges in place of their signatures was due to the banner needing to be completely done before the event...

Warwick loves it which is the most important thing! I made sure that his lady knew it's meant to be flown not hung on a wall and I can't wait to see it in the coming tourney season!!!

so... tips for silk painting...
1) it's alright to gutta on a flat surface.
2) do all your gutta at once instead of in fits and farts... I can see the difference in the depth of the color.
3) presist is your friend, lay it on thick, it likes it like that.
4) black only mostly covers colors.

this is art, not engineering. At least in my brains and hands. It brought to some realizations about what type of "art" makes my brain and hands happy... doesn't mean I won't try it again, I do have other banner projects on the giant post-it board... but it does mean I'm going to try to math-ify it... math, pattern, constant, engineery stuffs make me happy.

things I'm contemplating trying...
1) gutta-ing with a fine paint brush
2) layering the presist (think Psyanky eggs!!)

but, in the final grade of this project, I say it's a win! I am not unhappy with the final result (like most makers I see the stuff that other people won't), Gemma is happy, Warwick is happy, and I learned much!!

silk painting, makey-doey
