The sky... is blue because of the way light is or is not visible in the atmosphere. The shorter blue wavelengths are absorbed by the gas molecules and reflected back, while colors like red and orange or yellow have longer wavelengths and are less affected. This is why you see blue. The horizon is paler because the light has to pass through even more air, and is scattered about.
