[006] Riddle 000: Who am I?

Jun 22, 2007 17:35

Good evening.

For those interested, solve this simple riddle:
I am in front of you; I appear behind.
Those who run from me run into my embrace.
A man who faces me has turned his back on me,
And there, proud of his courage, is taken by me.

Name me.

I may reward those whose answers I like.

If you don't mind my asking, what is your name?

Why shadows? Why not darkness?

It can if there are multiple lights on you, but if you have to twist the conditions of the answer to make it fit the riddle, you're overthinking it.

Oh! Oh! Is it fear?

Oh wait no... The first and last line don't really match up.

If it isn't fear, what else could it be?

Well... maybe death? But everyone else guessed it already!

Because I mean, death is always in your future, but a lot of times people think of it sneaking up on them.
People try to get away from death but they can't and so they stress themselves out so much that they die from it.
People that aren't scared of death kind of defeat the purpose, so I guess you could say they've turned their back on it.
And people that aren't afraid of death let it take them when it's time.

Ahah, at least, that's how I think of it.

I like your answer. You're very pure.

Please be careful, or many will take advantage of you.

Yes.

Although the true answer isn't the one I'm looking for.

"Whose answers I like"--meaning it doesn't matter to you if people don't reply with the answer you have in mind.

Fine, then. I answer with "twilight"--in other words, encroaching darkness. However, I think "death," as guessed by another, is the proper solution.

Yes, I like your answer.

Why did you choose "twilight" instead of "nightfall"?

I like the word "twilight" better than I do "nightfall"--although that's not a bad word, either.

What does that tell you about me?

From your responses, I believe you appreciate the aesthetics of approaching darkness more than darkness itself. This leads me to believe you may enjoy literature or that which pertains to literature, well-spoken sentences, and quick minds that are not as quick as your own.

In my world, twilight is eerie. For those who drive automobiles (should they not have those things in your world, I will explain) it's a time during which it is harder to see and harder to notice people. Many have died by being hit by them at twilight time.

In this sense, twilight is more deadly than night because it's deceptive: it clouds vision and most of those stuck in it focus on the coming darkness or keeping their eyes to the light instead of paying equal attention to both.

Have you ever picked turmoil over tranquility?
