Hmm, so today was fun...only not really

Started off my morning by taking the dogs to the vet. Dozer has had a scab on his butt for the last month, and I thought it was a bite mark from Yuki since they tend to play pretty rough. But all of a sudden yesterday it grew from the size of a pencil tip to the size of a quarter and was totally bald. The first thought that came to my mind.. ( Read more... )

I've been treating Hank's mange since January 13th. It really sucks. Did he give you a tablet or liquid? Hank was on the tablet for about two weeks and it cleared the infestation on his hair follicles but not on his skin so he had to have this other liquid antibiotic. It's still not clear right now but we're going to try getting him neutered to see if it makes it go away. Did the vet say anything to you about neutering helping get rid of demodex?
Except canine acne too. Demodex and zits come hand and hand and I dont really know which is worse. Does Dozer have a health guarantee? I know Im slamming the breeder of Hank with 300 something dollars of vet meds and visits nextweek.

We're giving Dozer a liquid. He gets .04 cc of it once every 24 hours. I thought it was weird because to me it seems like you go in a lot and they don't want to see us for another month. Which is great on my pocket book, but at the same time idk. I guess if they know it takes a long time to heal then they don't need to make me come in every week to check on it ( ... )

yea Hank has juveile mites too. Hank wasn't covered in them though, he only found a few here and there.
The vet said, and I think I read about it too, that juvenile demodex is mostly hormonal (and theyre finding that it's genetically linked) and the fastest way to clear it and canine acne is to get rid of the hormone causing the problem. I went weekly so he could measure and scrape and give me the appropriate amount of meds each week so I wasn't paying more then I should for meds. But Hank cleared up pretty fast, he only has a few patches remaining and my vet decided that he was 95% clear and that's why we decided on getting the surgery now.
I pay umm.. 14 bucks for 7 syringes of antibiotics, and 14 bucks for a recheck. When I had to give him the tablets and the liquid it was 45 dollars, and skin scrapes are like.. 12 or something, but we only had two of those. So really in 7 visits I've only spent 250 ish dollars.

well wait. Im trying to remember what he said exactly about spay/neuter dogs with demodex.
I know he said that the worst cases he's ever seen were of unaltered female/pregnant dogs and it was worsened to that point only because they had not been spayed and they were having hormonal difficulties.
Which is why I think he said that hormones causing juvenile behavior and health issues (like acne) are caused by the hormones that are removed when neutering is done.
He also told me that there's a really good chance of demodex not reappearing if it goes away quickly with treatment, but they can linger around in some cases until the dog is 3 years old. it's shitty.
And I have to add that Hank didnt get the acne until about a two weeks ago.
I would be worried except this vet treats all of the bully breeds in the city I live in and has a bullmastiff himself.
