Age: About 60 I guess, it's impossible to know for sure. Appears between 18 and 20.

Family: None. This isn't uncommon though.
Point in Canon: A sixth rounder at the Academy, he’s been taking missions for the Gotei 13 (13 Division Imperial Guards) for a few months. He’s just discovered that the man who saved him as a child, ninth division captain Muguruma Kensei, is no longer captain of ninth. Kensei’s marked AWOL and considered dead.
History: Born in one of the lower districts of Rukongai, Shuuhei spent most of his life on the street. As a child, he and two friends were chased by a Huge Hollow and were saved by Muguruma Kensei and 4 of his top officers. This set Shuuhei on his path to becoming a shinigami.
A few months ago from his point in cannon, he and two other 6th rounders, Aoga and Kanisawa, took the top class of first rounders to the Human World to practice soul burial. The group were snuck up on by Huge Hollow that hid their reiatsu. Both Aoga and Kanisawa were killed and the right side of Shuuhei's face was injured. The injury caused three parallel scars that run the length of his face; he is still getting used to them and they twinge a bit if he smiles too widely. The attack did not cause any damage to his eye. Shuuhei was saved by three first years, Hinamori Momo, Kira Izuru and Abarai Renji, who disobeyed orders to return to the Academy and came back to help their sempai. Although the first years defeated one of the Huge Hollow, the group of 4 had to be saved by fifth division captain, Aizen Sousuke, and his lieutenant, Ichimaru Gin.
At some point between being rescued by Kensei and the incident mentioned above Shuuhei got a tattoo of the number 69 on his left cheek. This is the same tattoo Kensei has on his abdomen. Shuuhei got his as homage to the man who saved him. The 6 is because the first kanji of Muguruma Kensei is the same as the kanji for the number 6; the nine is because of ninth division.
Shuuhei became close friends with the three first years as upon his return most of his classmates shunned him for being the only one to return from the training session alive.
Personality: Despite his punkish exterior (a 69 tattoo on his left cheek, dog collar and now scars on the right side of his face), he is serious, a hard worker and considered a prodigy despite his failing the entrance exam into the Academy twice. The Huge Hollow attack that killed his classmates has caused a lot of fear in him and as such he is hesitant in his fighting. Around people he knows well he is actually a bit of a dork and he enjoys embarrassing his kouhai. Shuuhei is also very used to innuendos made related to his tattoo, despite this he still often blushes at them.
He also enjoys drinking, though he hasn’t quite figured out his limit yet (though getting his kouhai drunk is fun)
Items/things: Kazeshini, the Academy uniform he’s wearing (including his collar) and his bag. The bag contains a few textbooks and his pen and notebook which is filled with class notes and any information he could find on the man who saved him as a child.
Abilities: Shunpo (flash steps) - allows him to travel at high speeds though is slower than normal
Kidou (demon arts; think magic) - he is capable of both Bakudou (binding) and Hadou (destructive) skills, even managing to pull off some of the higher ones without the incantation. Unfortunately they are of little to no use, except Shakkahou would make a good light source.
Kazeshini (Death Wind) - His zanpakutou is wind based and he has recently obtained shikai (initial release). In its shikai state it takes the form of two kusarigama, mostly black, joined by a black chain, he hates the shape of it because it looks like it was made to reap lives. The wind based powers that were there seem to be gone here so there is even more reason for him not to release his zanpakutou.
Control of reishi (spirit particles) - he can solidify reishi beneath his feet giving the appearance that he has the ability to stand in mid air. Though there doesn't seem to be any reishi
