Veronica was in the kitchen, cleaning up after dinner. Dick was off playing video games. Lilly was in her room drawing. She didn't know where Isabel and Peter were, so when someone rang the doorbell, Veronica grabbed a dish towel and wiped her hands.

She opened the door, still holding the dish towel. "Can I help you?"

Isabel was in her room catching up on Google Reader and chatting with Maria on Instant Messenger.

She was not expecting any visitors.

Veronica knocked on Isabel's door frame and then leaned against it.

"So, um... you have a guest."

Once Veronica let Isabel know about her surprise guest, she hurried down to make sure Dick didn't say anything wrong.

She waited until he finished a level before interrupting. "We have a tiny problem."

Dick had be "in the zone" and jumped when Veronica spoke. "What did Lilly eat by accident?"

Wait...maybe that was him that kept eating things he wasn't supposed to.

"Nothing. She's in her room." She lowered her voice and leaned closer. "Isabel's fiance is here."

Jesse had been waiting where Veronica had left him, sipping his coffee, and looked up when Isabel came down the stairs, his face brightening. "Isabel!"

Jesse got up and opened his arms for a hug, returning the smile with interest. "I got off early today, and I figured, why not see what you're doing down here? You keep talking about it, and I missed you. If the mountain won't come to Mohammed, Mohammed goes to New Orleans."

Isabel stepped close for a hug, genuinely smiling for a moment. Jesse was a great guy. It was shame things had gotten so complicated.

"You surprised me. But it's good to see you."
