Julian Ikeda is the youngest of three children, having two older sisters Marian (11 years older) and Katherine (8 years older). His father was the leader of a kendo school while his mother was a flower arrangement teacher. Both his parents were second generation Japanese Americans, having moved to America to further their arts abroad. His mother died from complications arising from childbirth, leaving his father and sisters in charge of taking care of the family.
Julian showed surprising talent at a very young age with kendo and his father delighted in putting on displays for his only son and heir, allowing him to play along. That changed when Julian was seven. A top ranked student teasingly challenged him to a duel, and he beat the man hands down despite having received only minimal formal training. The student left the dojo out of anger and embarrassment, and Julian was told to never spar with anyone again. His father then left to persuade the student to return, but was murdered for his efforts - assumedly by the student who went missing soon after. The murderer is still at large and that appears to be a major source for the disconnect in Julian's personality. He bears a great deal of guilt and self-loathing over this incident.
Despite being orphaned at an early age, Marian and Katherine were old enough to continue caring for their brother and did so. Marian married early (at the age of 20) and launched a career in interior design. Katherine continued their mother's flower arrangement school. They attempted to raise Julian away from the sword, but it was obvious he had natural talent and naturally gravitated toward the martial arts - taking up karate, judo and aikido in elementary school. The local Japanese temple gave lessons on kendo and he attended those in secret, watching and practicing on his own. Around the age of 15 he began displaying obsessive tendencies - cleanliness and training and a near frenzied need to be the best. His teachers eventually forbade him from sparring with the other students in martial arts to prevent them from being harmed.
Marian removed Julian from the martial arts entirely and began focusing his attention on something more peaceful - visual art and design. He took to it well and seemed to calm down, pursuing an art degree in college with a minor in Japanese history. During the summer of his freshman year, Julian assisted his sister at her new design firm, helping with small things and finishing up details on small-scale design projects. He did the same work every summer until his junior year when an older man (who asked to remain anonymous andd is hereafter called "Allen") entered the company and took Julian on as an apprentice. Over the course of the next year, Julian's obsessive behavior began to focus solely on Allen, who also happened to have an interest in kendo and would take Julian along without realizing his past.
Julian attached to him instantly, seeking his approval and striving to be better for him. The last project they worked on together was for a movie set, designing and dressing a soundstage for an Edo period samurai film. One of the stages was to be set as the Mibu Temple and Julian was awarded this task as a show of trust from Allen. During this time, Julian became violently ill, was diagnosed with tuberculosis, and began receiving treatment. He was told to rest from the project and experienced his first psychotic break - believing himself to be a samurai. His sisters attempted to relieve him of his delusion by removing from him the firm entirely and their accounts say that it worked for a short while.
His second break came later when he happened to chance across the student who had killed his father, but was unable to capture him. Believing that his disease was the reason for his failure, he convinced himself that he was Okita Souji and began following after Allen and other prominent members of the firm to come with him to "avenge" the honor of the Shinsengumi and "assassinate" the killer. He was temporarily hospitalized, but later released to his sisters again at their request. When it became apparent they were incapable of caring for him at home, they turned him over to Landel's Institute.
