we spent the afternoon helping liz and andrew move into their new apartment, three blocks down the street from their old apartment, but on a very pretty block of brick houses and trees changing color, just across the street from st. rita's (I always say hello to st. rita -- she is so pristine up there on the steeple, dramatically lit, holding a ( Read more... )

I got my IUD recently and I really, really love it. I ended up with Mirena. I sort of feel like I want to give everyone with an IUD either a thumbs-up, or a hug.

I'm also gonna go for the mirena. I've wanted one for a long time, but I've been in an insurance holding pattern for a while, I've had friends with mixed feelings about them, and I have a really problematic menstrual cycle that I felt I needed to talk to a gyno about before I made any moves. the gyno I saw prescribed, despite my reticence and my desire to explore other options, a combined HBC pill that my insurance wouldn't cover.

but PP took care of all of that for me, with that beautiful planning waiver and lots of good sound judgment. the nurse told me that she was SHOCKED that a doctor would prescribe combined HBC for me given my medical history (my mom is barely in her 50s and has had 2 strokes; I get migraines; I had bad experiences with the pill in the past) and thought that the low dose of progestin in the mirena would be good for me.

I AM SO EXCITED. so excited. I can't even explain it to anyone, except ladies that KNOW what I MEAN.

I waited until I got real insurance, too, and then I made sure to find a gyn that was comfortable inserting IUDs in someone who had never been pregnant/had a child. There were some scheduling issues, but as soon as I was ready it only took about 45 seconds, so it was nice and quick.
Forewarning: do, do, -do- take some ibuprophen before you go, a large dose. I had a very rough 4 hours (that now I would double even to 8 with how happy I am with this thing.)

"the gyno I saw prescribed, despite my reticence and my desire to explore other options, a combined HBC pill that my insurance wouldn't cover." Ugh. I hate this type of thing. I could go on all day, but since I suspect you crinkle your nose up at the thought, too, I'll pass.

I -do- know your excitement. When I first made my appointment, there were only 2 people locally that I told, and they both happened to be Catholic. There was no reciprocity at all. *s* Best of luck!
