Really, he'd known all along that whatever he had going with Spock wasn't meant to be permanent. He'd known it, implicitely, that first time in his office. Known it even better when she flat out told him that it wouldn't be forever

It wasn't a long walk back to his quarters from where he'd met her, and thankfully she wasn't chatty. He wasn't sure he could even give the precursor to this conversation in front of any member of the crew. This was for her adorably pointed ears only.
Finally getting her inside, he guided her over to the couch, encouraging her to sit down with him. "How'd the visit go today?"
And maybe it was good. Why should the colony need two Spocks, if the other was organizing things so well? He should be able to keep one. It was only fair, really, her being half human and all. Except he knew it wasn't.
"How about... what's-his-face, there, that you were supposed to bond with?" He almost didn't want to ask, that's why it was so blaise.
