Even though George and Jim were both suffering from sniffles and a fever, Leonard could only pay absolute attention to one of them at a time. Especially when Jim was being difficult and insisting on doing paperwork in the living room. She needed the light and didn't want to risk waking their sleeping daughter up unnecessarily.
And so Leonard sat in the rocking chair in little-but-growing Georgia's room and watched her, arms folded across his chest and rather deep in thought. The Enterprise's first mission was nearly up. Now would be the time for the Captain and CMO to request transfers, if they wanted them. And, yeah, alright, Leonard wanted them. He wanted to have his girls on Earth where they were safe and not stuck on this damned ship forever. Time had proven, though, that he's married the wrong woman for a quiet life anywhere. Jim Kirk was just not the quiet sort of woman.
The problem came in that he didn't want her unhappy on Earth and she didn't want him unhappy in Space. There had to be a compromise somewhere, he knew. Five years of sharing a bed with her proved there were compromises for everything.
Leonard's musings were interrupted by the door opening. Jim, already in one of his shirts for sleeping, smiled at him softly, then pointed at the bed and raised a questioning eyebrow. Smiling back, Leonard nodded and gave her a thumb up. Jim beamed and pointed a finger at him, next, before crooking it towards herself. Mouthing 'yes, ma'am,' Leonard stood and did as he was told, following Jim as she went back to settle on the couch.
When he sat beside her, she crawled into his lap and kissed him before getting down to business. “I forged your signature last week.”
That had her husband's eyebrows going up. “You did?” he asked dumbly. “Why?”
“Because,” Jim started slowly, almost as if she were teasing, “I wanted it to be a surprise when I told you that, in four months, you'll have a new job.”
“I will?”
“So will I. I just got word from San Francisco that I'll be teaching hand to hand and survival basics at the Academy next semester.”
He blinked dumbly at her a few moments, before a smile twitched at his lips and he let it. “You got us transferred to Earth.” Jim nodded, the slightest bit of hesitation in her eyes. “And you’re sure that’s what you want, darlin’?”
“I think it is.” Again, she was talking slowly. “I’ll get to be with you and our daughter, but still get to hit up dangerous planets for training missions. And you’ll be back running the clinic, ready to patch me up.”
“So you’ll still get your danger fix,” Leonard replied, teasing.
Giving a quiet chuckle, she settled her head on his shoulder, and his hand moved immediately to play with her hair while she rested against him. “I haven’t figured out living arrangements yet, or how long this will last or what we’ll do when it’s over, but...”
“We’ll figure it out,” he said softly, when she trailed off.
Against her husband’s neck, Jim smiled. “We always do.”
