Matt shoves more wood on the fire and beams up at Al. It's the first day in a long time they have had together so Matt made a pile of pancakes the size of Al's head and there are plans for a burger later. But for now Al devours the food like he's never ate before and Matt barely notices the stare Al is fixing him with.
But when Al swallows and tilts his head, then gives Matt this shining grin, Matt's stomach does a little flip and he blinks back.
"It works. I can't see any difference." Al's grin is threatening to split his face now and Matt blinks back, owlish in his confusion and tilts his head.
"See a difference in what?" He reached over to grab his knife and slipped a little. He cut the tip of finger open and hissed softly, holding it up to his mouth. Before he realized that it was strange, the cut stopped bleeding and Matt went about cutting up his pancakes.
"You don't look a day over 20." Al was leaning over the table to peer at Matt now, inspecting his face and even reached over to tilt it this way and that. Matt gave him a look that stated he was clearly unimpressed with all this and tried to snatch back his head.
"I'm 27 Al, we've been here 12 years and can I eat now?"
"Look at us Matt, we don't look any older! We're still the same as when we were 20, maybe even younger. It worked, it really worked, I knew I could make it work!" Al was grinning so widely and brightly and geez what was Al talking about.
"Al what ARE you going on about?"
"I worked it out, I'm sharing the healing factor with you, we can both stay this age forever--just...well not if you like...get killed. But you won't die from old age! We'll just...wait until the school pops back up and we can see everyone again Mattie!"
Matt blinked at him slowly and tilted his head. Al was talking about them. Talking about the future, their past, the people they had left behind. That in and of itself was a revelation. But what Al was suggesting, waiting 200 plus years for their friends, their family to be born, to grow up, to come there. He sat back hard and closed his eyes.
"Let's do it."
