i really don't see the appeal of Ubuntu

Jaime finally migrated everything to his new Core i7 rig. Thanks to that, I was finally given the go-ahead to make his old compy a media box. At adam's suggestion, we install Ubuntu, configured that as best we could, then installed the XBMC binaries

correct, ubuntu basically ignores xorg at this point.

anyway, i assume you installed nvidia-190-* and nvidia-glx-190-* ?

ps would you mind grabbing me Fringe s1e012 thru s1e20?

(and the only reason i suggested ubuntu is i had no video type trouble and i assume we have *roughly* the same video card.)
