[for Chase] Now that was the life

Most of the Jessicas -- Jessicii? Probably not, but it's fun to say -- are probably still back in the rec room or lab, either trying not to touch anything, shuffling through the bookshelf as one can only do when one is in fact at least two on bookshelf duty, or trying to crack it in the lab ( Read more... )

So it looked like the entire island had developed random powers, overnight, except Chase. If he had ever needed the universe to find an even bigger way to stamp You're Not Special on his forehead, well, he needed no longer.

He'd begged off being social- watching people running around being super strong and flying and some weirder stuff, like punning while they blasted shit like Mr. Freeze- and gone to the beach, had paddled out into the water on the surfboard he'd made (with help) ages ago, and hadn't come in for two hours. Now, mostly dry, t-shirt tucked in his back pocket, he was walking the beach alone. Old Lace was babysitting the mogwai- too hot and bright out to keep him in his usual canvas sack- and without the kids, Chase was just sort of wandering.

Until he caught sight of Jessica in a dress. His eyebrows crept up at roughly the same speed his feet slowed down.

"Hey, nerd," he called, lifting one hand lazily in greeting.

Since when did she wear dresses at non-events? Was that a thing, now?

Now, that's a bright spot in an otherwise somewhat alarming day.

"Hey, jock," she calls back, pausing to reflexively smooth out her dress and then stroll over. Casually. Nothing out of the ordinary. "Is it me, or is today kind of nuts?"

Is it me. Ha. Well, she technically was, and he'd get weird if she mentioned that whole deal straight away. She found she didn't like the idea of weirding Chase out right now.

"Yeah," Chase said, "kinda why I bounced. I mean, I'm not hiding out." He gestured to the fact that he was out in the open on the stretch of beach.

"Right? Just..." He absently rubbed the back of his neck, and shrugged.

"Steering clear. How about you, had to be something pretty big to get you out of that lab."

"Lab's kind of crowded," she says, with a small shrug. Again, neglecting that a large part of that crowd could well be other versions of her. She was enjoying being the only one of her in the viciniy, frankly, and wasn't about to bring the others into it, even just referentially. "It's a Who's Who of island science in there. Which'd make it a Who's Whom, I guess. Company out here is way better."
