[Background info]
Having awakened the special bloodline limit of the Uchiha clan; the Sharingan, at the age of eight, always scoring at the top of his class in the ninja Academy as well as having become ANBU at the age of twelve Uchiha Itachi was early on labelled the genius of his generation of shinobi. He was highly praised by both his clansmen and the village’s high council. And this was exactly what got him into trouble. Because his clan and the village turned out to be enemies. The Uchiha plotted to take over the rule of Konoha, and as a member of the clan and also the number one most skilled ninja, Itachi was expected to be part of the coup.
Itachi, however, didn’t approve of such a coup. He found the Uchiha’s ambitions to be disgraceful and petty, and that the clan had lost it’s pride. His early experiences of war also made him resent the decision that his clan had made, as such a coup most likely would lay the ground to a fourth ninja war. Konoha wasn’t late to take advantage of this, and they gave Itachi an "honour mission"; to destroy the Uchiha. Every single one. This was something that Itachi as a human being would rather not do, but as a ninja, he realized that he had little choice. This was what brought him before Uchiha Madara, and the Akatsuki. He wanted to make sure that Uchiha Madara never touched the Hidden Village of the Leaf, in exchange for getting revenge on the clan that had betrayed him. And so came the fated night which practically created the backstory for the entire series.
A true ninja does not cry, and he doesn’t hesitate when he’s faced with an emotionally hard mission. Itachi was the perfect shinobi, in every way. He completed even this mission almost flawlessly. And by almost, we mean to say that there was one person who Itachi failed to kill; his younger brother. His father and mother, who he was most likely very disappointed in for taking part of (and even leading, in his father’s case) the plot against Konoha, the elderly members of the clan, the civilians, the women and children, his own lover... he killed everyone except for his brother, and then he left Konoha to join the Akatsuki and keep an eye one the organization from the inside, once again making himself a double-agent between Konoha and another group of dangerous ninja.
Exactly why he left Sasuke alive is yet unknown, but I will dare to speculate that Itachi was deeply weighted by his own guilt. No matter how twisted an individual he has got to have been to be able to go through with the assignment to kill his entire family, he was still a human being. And he left Sasuke alike with one single goal in his mind; to kill Itachi. If that’s not an action that points towards Itachi wanting to redeem his actions and rid himself of that guilt, then I don’t know what it is.
If we skip a few less important details (like Itachi coming back to Konoha just after the Third Hokage’s death and appearing to be after Kyuubi; the demon sealed inside of Naruto and that only the Uchiha can control, though we’re not certain if this is something that Itachi wants for himself or if he’s only acting on orders from Madara), this brings us to the last few moments of Uchiha Itachi’s life, which he spends fighting his little brother, seemingly because he wants to get his hands on Sasuke’s eyes to obtain a “higher level of Sharingan”. If we were to believe what we’ve been told in the chapters following Itachi’s death, this wasn’t the purpose of that fight at all; instead, Itachi knew that he was dying and wanted to pass on the last of his powers to his younger brother, so that he would be able to fight Madara himself when the two of them met. Oh and, don’t let yourself be deceived by how he didn’t seem to be holding back during his and Sasuke’s fight at all; that was only so that he’d be able to push Sasuke into activating his Curse Seal so that Itachi would be able to free him from Orochimaru’s influence.
...in conclusion, whether or not the story that Uchiha Madara has told us is true, Itachi is still the Worst Big Brother in History.
[Personality]
Laaayerrrrsss. People have them. Itachi has more of them. What you see of him isn’t who he is, though you will most likely never, ever know that. Itachi spent his entire life hiding his true self, and it’s easy to assume that he will continue to do so once he realizes that he is back in Gakuen (yeah, about that; read "Other important facts" ^__~). He’s calm and silent, for the most part, and he doesn’t care one bit if he’s ridiculed. Gotta wonder why the Principal finds him entertaining enough to bring back to Gakuen... You’ll rarely see him lose his temper, or even react in a way that could be considered “normal”. He avoids violence if he can, though if he can’t avoid it, he’ll probably kick anyone who poses a real threat’s ass rather easily. Only kick their ass, though. Hand it to them nice and good, but not kill them, as Itachi doesn’t approve of pointless killing.
[Abilities]
One; the Sharingan. This is a bloodline limit, an ability that comes with being an Uchiha. It gives Itachi the ability to copy any movement, and any jutsu, and perform it at almost the exact same moment as his opponent. It also makes him able to see chakra, and increase his speed, as well as see through any genjutsu/illusion.
Two; the Mangekyou Sharingan, which is the higher level of the Sharingan. Today, Itachi is the third person in the world who has activated this ability, Uchiha Madara and Uchiha Sasuke being the other two. The Mangekyou is obtained when you kill your closest person. The one that Itachi killed to get it was his best friend, Uchiha Shisui, who has been said to be "as close to Itachi as a brother". The Mangekyou gives Itachi the ability to manipulate his opponent’s chakra flow and trap them inside a very complicated genjutsu, called Tsukiyomi. This illusion is so strong that it is impossible for anyone without the Sharingan to break loose from it, and it can easily crack it’s victim’s mind and kill them on the spot.
Three; the Mangakyou also comes with two extra features; one is the Amaterasu, which is a fire that can’t be put out until the user either decides to put it out or the user is killed.
Four; the other special jutsu of the Mangekyou is called Susano. Judging from how Itachi doesn’t use the technique until the very last moment, I’d say that it is pretty damn dangerous for him to use it often. Susano is a strange (and ugly) technique, which I’d say most likely is an “ultimate defence” technique. Susano weilds the Totsuka, a spirit sword which can’t be deflected and which traps the one who is pierced by it in an eternal illusion, and the “Yata’s mirror” which can deflect any technique his opponent throws at Itachi. Susano also does weird stuff to Itachi’s eyes. Weirder than the usual Sharingan or the Mangekyou, I mean.
Five; basic stuff. Ninjutus, genjutsu, taijutsu. But better.
[Other important facts]
I’ll be picking Itachi from after his death in chapter 400, which should mean that he’s pretty badly wounded, as well as almost completely blind, if not completely blind. However, I’d like to compromise a little and make him not-quite-as-blind-and-wounded as he should be. I would also like to let him keep his memories of the last time he was in Gakuen, and let his return work a little bit like the canon updates.

...I see a few changes has been made. While I hesitate to call all of them distasteful... I fail to see the necessity of keeping undead people (and animals) in the attic. And I do feel the need to question the decision to have me lodge together with them; I am, as it would seem, very much alive in this place.
...my apologies, undead-san, but if you would please give me back my luggage... There is no need for a change of attire in your case, surely, your dress suits you better than my cloak.
...
Yes, the sign is very nice. " WELCOME BACK TO HELL POOR LITTLE BLIND, DEAD NINJA ITACHI-SAN". The... enthusiasm is...... appreciated. No, I do not mind the choice of colours. .......no, the sparkles do not hurt my eyes. Now, I would appreciate if someone would please relieve me of it, it is a little bit hindering if I have to hold it while talking things over with the undead-san in the cloak and with nail-polish all over it’s face over there.
