Anew stood in the large, empty mess hall, her hands clasped in front of her nervously. She couldn't remember ever feeling this nervous before - although admittedly, she couldn't remember all that much at all. In fact the first memory that was clear to her was waking up, and soon after that, being approached by Wang Liu Mei. The young Chinese celebrity had seemed sympathetic and not at all surprised when Anew had explained about her seemingly complete memory loss - even offered to use her connections to help find her a job.
Celestial Being, Miss Liu Mei had said. So far, it didn't seem to be anything like what she would have expected - and she'd been surprised at being able to remember who Celestial Being, the Federation, even the A-Laws were, even though she couldn't seem to remember anything about her personal life. Trying to force herself to remember anything about that just seemed to give her headaches. Maybe she had been involved in a similar sort of thing before her memory loss...
Either way, it was a job, and she was more than grateful for that, no matter what organisation she was working for. But she couldn't help being nervous. What if she'd forgotten everything about whatever professions she was supposed to be working as here? She could remember, bizarrely, the theory of complicated regenerative medicine and even the finer points of some mobile suit engineering - but she couldn't recall a time when she'd ever had to put it into practice. Oh, it was all so confusing...
"Excuse me?"
She jumped and turned to find a smiling blonde woman, glasses daintily perched on the end of her nose, standing in the doorway holding a folded uniform in her arms.
"You must be Anew Returner. Wang Liu Mei's told us so much about you." Before Anew could respond, either to protest or agree, she continued: "I'm Linda Vashti. I work in engineering here." Her smile became more gentle. "If you'd like, I'll just give you your uniform, and then we can see what you can do."
Anew nodded and summoned a smile. "Yes. I'd like that very much."
"That's great!" Linda smiled. "If you'd just like to follow me, I'll find you somewhere you can change. You'll have to watch out for my husband, I'm afraid," she added with a small laugh as they floated together into the corridor. "He might tease you slightly, but he means well..."
Anew let her smile become more genuine, suddenly at ease. Somehow, she felt welcome here already.
[Anew sits up in bed and rubs the sleep from her eyes before commenting thoughtfully] I haven't seen Linda in a while...
