Man, either last entry REALLY sucked, or my lack of being on LJ all that much of late has REALLY caught up to me, because my last entry garnered all of one comment, AND someone de-friended me after I posted it. I was really kind of proud of it, too; it had made me laugh. But I have been a really bad LJ friend, so I guess I get what I pay for. At ( Read more... )

I started writing a comment about the whole vegetarian/environmentalism thing, but I wasn't sure if it would be taken the wrong way.

Oh?

If you want to convince me that it's not absolutely ridiculous, that won't work, but feel free to say whatever you want. God knows I would. :)

Haha, okay, just didn't want to seem like I was picking a fight. :) I have some LJ friends who only comment to correct me on something, and I didn't want to be annoying like they sometimes are.

I think the argument is more about how much it costs to ship corn to the cow place, ship the cows to the meat place, and ship the meat to supermarkets. Gas usage, vehicle emissions, etc. And also, I forget the ratio, but it's something like it takes 30 pounds of corn to make 1 pound of beef, so the 30 pounds of corn will feed more people than the 1 pound of beef (and so is a more efficient food). I've also been reading The Omnivore's Dilemma, and the author has some pretty good points about our food system in general. It's pretty interesting, I'm about 150 pages into it, and I recommend it.

With that said, I still eat meat at least 1-2 times per day.

Oh, see...every single argument I've read about the vegetarian angle has been aimed at the methane gas angle. I mean, every single thing ever that we buy needs to be shipped all around. Couches need wood and fabric shipped to warehouses, the couches are shipped to Sear's. Toys need paint and plastic and springs shipped to Mattel, then completed toys shipped to Toys R Us, etc. So I don't see that as a great argument, unless it turns into a whole "don't buy anything you don't make yourself", and that leads to, among other weirdnesses, a hunting society which still ends up killing animals. :-p

Beef tastes better than corn. I could get nutrients from eating animal droppings, too, but why should I have to? :-D

Ugh, sorry to hear that.. Long distance IS hard. And as much as you go in with awesome intentions.. time and new scenery, I mean that can change things. But I'm just going on my past experience and stuff.

And having a best friend, not be anymore.. and not being able to confide in someone. I'm with ya too..

It's just a temporary long distance, anyway. Not anything long term. So...weee. :)

Yeah, I dunno. It's weak.

She should get Skype. When I lived in Ireland for 3 months, what I did was I got a Seattle area code Skype phone number and then just called people on my computer. And if I was going to be away from my computer for a long time, I just had it forward to my Irish cell phone, although it did get expensive.

It's difficult, but it's not *too* bad once you get used to setting aside times to talk.
