Where have you been, NotBatman?

Oct 12, 2010 11:38

So I haven't been posting very much, lately. The occasional Adventure! photo-bomb, but that's about it. My experience with LiveJournal is becoming strained.

Just over a month ago they introduced some comment cross-posting jack-assery with FaceButt. Aside from having no interest whatever in FaceButt and decidedly not wanting anything linking me to ( Read more... )

Honestly it would take a lot for me to actually pack up and leave altogether.

The most extreme liklihood is just locking everything down as "Friends Only" on this side and crossposting from DreamWidth. The people I give a shit about here will still get everything, but I won't leave anything public here if FaceButt takes over.

I still have to come here to read my friends page and all... :)

You gotta do what you gotta do mister. I have bookmarked your new site just in case.

The chances of this LJ disappearing altogether are astronomically slim, and I won't go without leaving a forwarding address. :)

I am looking at stepping back a little, is all. I've run a paid account all this time to avoid the ads and other jackassery and I really don't feel like paying them any longer is all. So words might appear at DW first, but barring unforseen weirdness, they should all be automatically cross-posted here immediately anyway.

Do the photos also migrate? My problem is most of my recent material is tied to the LJ gallery.

But yeah, I was quite alarmed when they decided to do the whole "offensive content" flagging garbage. Then the "virtual gifts" started popping up on my profile page. Who's enough of a sucker to buy a low res jpeg of a fucking cupcake? Then the snuggles with farcebook......

I've got both LJ and the facebook, but they serve two separate functions. Facebook for the wider masses, LJ for what I really want to say. The two shall not touch.

As far as I know, they don't have any means of hosting photos onsite yet. I believe I read in one of their recent news/release posts that it was something they were trying to work out.

I totally get having the two for different reasons, and I even understand that there are people who might want to conjoin them. But they seem dead-set against offering anything that resembles a true opt-out for the whole thing and that makes it seem like integration is a done deal, it's just being rolled out piece by piece.

FaceButt creeps me right the hell out.

What I don't understand is how they can link the two without me giving them some information or permission. There are dozens of people with my name on facebook.

But yes, DW does carry that lovely .org and seems to be exactly what attracted us to LJ in the begining.

LJ is far too much of a business now. If DW gets the photo thing ironed out I will be over there before March.

I believe they make the connection through your email address.

I apparently missed the whole LJ/Facebook debacle. Not sure what it all means, but if my entire FB can now read my LJ...I've got some serious 'splainin' to do!

Also? Happy to see your words, amigo!

"Happy to see your words, amigo!"

Right back at you! :)

I'm trying to make more words happen... I can't remember the last time I wrote about Hunter...

I have had issues with other LJ clones like this one. Mainly their disappearance. The two that I had joined years ago are both gone. Could DreamWidth die too? Quite possibly. I was dissatisfied with LJ for a while and had been posting less and less then not at all. But now I'm back.

"Mainly their disappearance. "

Hadn't thought about that... Whatever other problems LJ might have, it does seem to have longevity going for it. Of course everything on the intarwub is ultimately ephemeral anyway. I guess the answer is to keep hedging bets, online and offline back-ups all around.

A lot of this silliness I wouldn't mind losing, but a lot of the silliness I'd like to look back on again.

Hey, I came here through search (DW co-owner here) and I wanted to reassure you, we absolutely can be around for the long term. Both my co-owner and I worked for LJ for years, so we knew precisely what we were getting into (most people running LJ clone sites have no idea about the amount of work it involves), and we had a solid business plan well in place before we even began development work.

You can check out our business FAQs if you want to learn more!

(Also, notbatman, welcome to DW. :)

(edit: omg, sorry, I am so used to using DW user tags that I even use them on LJ now!)
