My aunt has very bad ulcerative colitis, had had for as long as I can remember and has spent a fair bit of time in hopsital. She got her colostomy bag a few years ago and she says it hasn't stopped her doing anything, even goes snorkling etc.. on holiday. She's says it's not as bad as she thought it would be and since the op she's built her body weight back up- she was pretty much skin and bones before it.
Just thought I'd mention it so you know that even the worst isn't as bad you as might be thinking. Hope you don't mind random people commenting...

Fortunately, though, the colitis has been very managable for the past year, so touch wood, surgery needn't be an option.
