RIP My Sweet lady

Dear Cassie Cat,

For 12 years you were part of our household. You were a dear friend and companion to my son since he was 3 years old.

You became the elder lady of our clan. You endured the many invasions by foster kittys on their way to new homes. You were a warm, tolerant and loving soul. When we went to the vet yesterday, I was hopeful that you had nothing more serious than perhaps some asthma or at worst a bout of pneumonia. But it wasn't to be.
The vet found your chest cavity filled with fluid. It was easy to see you were in a great deal of distress and quite uncomfortable. Despite your loving ways and happy demeanor carrying on as usual, you were doing it through considerable pain. The choices for treating you were not good.
You've had a very healthy life up till then and the idea of getting your chest drained with painful needles every few weeks and being miserable between times wasn't very appealing. Then there was the unknown underlying cause of all this to deal with. What was it Dear Lady? Cancer? Heart defect? Some deep seated infection?

The vet showed me your x-rays and lab results. It was clear that your misery was just beginning. You loved us and showed us how much you cared for us. But you also were asking for help - desperately - not to feel this way anymore. Sadly, we gave you the gift of freedom. As the drug flowed into your vein, the pain left along with your life. Thank you for honoring us with the years you loved us.
