My family is proud to have a member in the Elite Four. We've held the Blackthorn Gym in our family for ages, but I am the first to go farther than that. My grandfather could have made it,  I am sure of it, but he did not want to settle in one place so long.

Indeed it is. The Dragon Clan has been supportive of its followers for many years.

You're close, Pallet Town is not large, is it? You and the Oak's must have known each other well enough, or is it larger than I remember?
