Raspy coughs, loud sneezes, and bounteous sniffles filled the once silent air. Each noise slowly chipping away at the leader’s heart. Hankyung looked around the room only to be greeted by pale faces with red noses and distant eyes.

He noticed the empty bottle of Nyquil lying on the table in front of him, he had just gone to get more medicine the night before and it seemed he would have to again and soon. His stomach began to wrench as he noticed how sick he let his dongsaengs get, feeling their illness was entirely his fault.

Maybe they didn’t get the same about of sleep they used to in Korea, maybe learning Mandarin was just tiring them out, maybe the polluted air was corroding their lungs. Maybe they drank tap water because he forgot to warn them, maybe their practices were too long and the sets of the shows they went on were too hot. Hankyung couldn’t help but think all these members wouldn’t have these problems if they were under the watchful eye of leader Eeteuk.

Hankyung let out a frustrated sigh before pushing himself up off the couch, he didn’t have time to care of his own fever, the others needed him, needed him to fix this mess he created.

“Kyuhyun-ah.’ Hankyung smiled crouching down next to the chair the second youngest member of SJM had sprawled out in.

“Yeah?” Kyuhyun turned his head heavily to face the leader, his nose making a squeaking noise every time he breathed in.

“I think you should go lay down,” Hankyung whispered gently, touching the younger man’s forehead for a temperature.

“Okay, but not until after I wash my face, I don’t like hearing the fans say stuff about my acne.” Kyuhyun weakly pushed himself upwards.

“No, you go right to bed then I’ll come in and wash your face for you.” Hankyung ordered, not wanting Kyuhyun to pass out while trying to do the simple task.

“Okay, thank you hyung.” Kyuhyun smiled feebly before dragging himself down the hallway. Hankyung pouted as he followed the other man with his eyes making sure he made it into his bedroom.

After this Hankyung decided to make some soup for all the members to soothe their raw throats but was shocked by the surprise he found in the kitchen, Ryeowook sleeping on the cool floor with a box of cookies in his hand. Hankyung shook his head before scooping up the younger man up into his arms.

Ryeowook squirmed slightly as Hankyung carried him into his room, normally the younger man would have fully awakened when being carried but he was too exhausted to lift his eyelids. Hankyung carefully placed the smaller man on his bed, making sure not to disturb the peaceful boy.

Hankyung froze when exiting Ryeowook’s room he could hear Siwon whispering sweet nothings to Heechul on the phone. Even though Siwon didn’t show it Hankyung knew how much he missed the oddity which is Heechul.

The leader stepped out into the hall after listening to Siwon’s voice begin to crack as tears flooded his eyes from missing his lover so much. Hankyung wondered how lonely Siwon felt and wondered if it was his own fault, his own fault for tearing apart the happy couple for the sole making of SJM.

A loud cry from the bathroom made Hankyung stiffen before running to the door and whipping it open, he frowned at the pathetic sight of Zhoumi bent over the toilet, hugging the porcelain as he emptied his stomach of all it’s contents. Henry stood rubbing the other man’s back comfortingly while whispering things like “that’s it, get it all out of your system, you’ll feel better.”

“Zhoumi are you okay? How long has he been throwing up?” Hankyung questioned, wondering when he began to slack off on his duties.

“About a half an hour, he’s been slowing down now though, so I think he’s going to be fine. Dehydrated but fine.” Henry responded as Zhoumi began to throw up once more.

“I’m going to go make some soup, once he stops can you bring him to the kitchen so we can give him something to drink?”

“Yes.” Henry nodded obediently before focusing his attention back on the sick man beside him. Hankyung silently slipped out of the room feeling unneeded and unhelpful. He trudged slowly down the hall and back into the kitchen.

He pulled a pot out of a cupboard flicking on the sink faucet, letting the water flow into the pot. He then shut the water off and placed the pot on the burner, before turning it on. He dug out several different vegetables out of the refrigerator to cut up.

Hankyung took in a deep breath resting his arms against the counter. Images of the empty fridge flashed through his mind. He cursed himself, knowing he should keep the fridge fully packed at all times for the members. He lowered his head smacking it lightly off the counter. He ignored the pain that shot through his body, it was less than the emotional stress that tugged on his heart strings.

His back stiffed as he felt a warm face nuzzle against his shoulder. “Nymm whynz nyong?” Hankyung smiled slightly at the incoherent mumbles. He stood up fully, feeling the head slip off his shoulder, he carefully turned around to see a concerned looking Donghae.

“Hyung, what’s wrong?” Donghae questioned gazing into the leader’s sad eyes.

“Nothing,” Hankyung pulled out his best fake smile.

“Then you just hit your head off the counter for nothing? Geesh your silly.” Donghae poked the older man, hoping to get some sort of reaction. Hankyung’s lips twitched slightly into a smile for a second before faltering as Donghae coughed.

“I’m sorry.” Hankyung whispered glancing down.

“Hm? What do you have to be sorry for?” Donghae questioned, his eyebrows furrowing together cutely with his confusion.

“I’m the reason all of you are sick.” Hankyung sighed. “If you were home with Eeteuk you’d all be healthier.”

“Oh so this is why you are so down…” Donghae nodded as if everything was making sense.

“What?”

“You think you are doing a terrible job as being a leader.” Donghae pointed out. Hankyung bit his lip nervously trying to get himself ready for a lecture on how he needs to improve.

“First of all you have to stop comparing yourself to Teukie, he is our Korean Umma, in Korea.” Donghae emphasized the last bit. “ We are sick because we aren’t used to the air here, but that’s not your fault nor have you predicted our reactions. And we always get sick home back in Korea, it’s because SM drives us so hard with schedules, which is something you have no control over.”

Hankyung opened his mouth to speak but Donghae placed a finger to his lips, “I’m not done. Hyung, you have been there with us all teaching us and helping us with our Mandarin, you know how stressful that is? And you remained calm even when my mind would wonder. You are the reason we all can speak Mandarin and sing it as well as we can. You are a strong leader, you cook us dinner every night or get food from your Umma’s restaurant. So you always make sure we don’t go hungry. And you run around buying medicine and making food even while you are sick.”

Hankyung thought for moment, “But you guys always cry you miss people back in Korea.”

“Well you miss people back in Korea too. You miss Heechul making you his slave when he goes shopping.” Donghae smiled leaning against his hyung. “Missing people is normal, but it doesn’t mean we are completely unhappy here. I know I’m happy here by your side.” Donghae wrapped his arms around the older man, burying his head into his chest.

“T…Thanks Hae,” Hankyung smiled responding to the hug, he couldn’t remember a single bad thought he was thinking before this conversation.

“You judge yourself too harshly.” Donghae pouted, “Everyone else sees you as a great leader.” Hankyung smiled as he felt the warmth from the hug seep into his body, making the cloudy day seem a lot brighter.

“Now, you go clean Kyuhyunnie’s face and I’ll finish the soup.” Donghae relased the odler man from the hug.

“Hae… do you remember the last time you cooked in a kitchen?” Hankyung wondered suspiciously.

“I can do it!” Donghae whined stomping his feet slightly.

“Okay okay.” Hankyung chuckled as he exited the kitchen, stopping in the bathroom to pick up two wash clothes one with warm water and one with cool before grabbing Kyuhyun’s face cream and sneaking into his room to clean the younger man’s face.

***********************************

Hankyung let out a content sigh as he exited Kyuhyun’s room, he was surprised at how the younger man tried to fight him away as he put on the cream. A loud yelp from the kitchen sent Hankyung running to it. Once he entered he noticed Donghae holding his finger his eyes swelling with tears.

“Aww Hae!” Hankyung quickly stepped over to the younger male. “Here let me help soothe your pain, as you did for me.” Hankyung lifted the finger to his mouth, letting his tongue escape out rubbing against the finger before he placed Donghae’s finger completely in his mouth sucking on it to stop the bleeding.

The younger man stared wide eyed watching his hyung.

“Feel better?” Hankyung asked as he released Donghae’s finger.

“Mmmhmm.” Donghae nodded, “You are the best possible SJM leader!” Donghae threw his arms excitedly around the older man.
