Bah Humbug

Every year I understand more and more why people hate Christmas. I want absolutely nothing to do with it this year. It just seems like all the things about Christmas that are supposed to be good are either turning bad, don't count for some reason this year, or just don't matter to me any more. I mean, think about the things that are supposed to ( Read more... )

Jaunary will be awesome and if you want, we can have a celebration we can call "cooler than christmas!" which will involve no presents (since I am also on the broke edge of poor) but a potluck of desserts and everyone talking about how awesome everyone else is.

And watercress sandwhiches. Since I've recently heard of them and are fascinated. I don't know what watercress is but I'm SURE it's like a delicious mix of lettuce, cucumbers, and green peppers.

Dictionary.com on watercress:

1. A pungent perennial Eurasian herb (Rorippa nasturtium-aquaticum) of the mustard family, growing in freshwater ponds and streams and used in salads and as a garnish.
2. Any of several related aquatic plants.

or

adj : of a moderate yellow-green color that is greener and deeper than moss green and yellower and darker than pea green [syn: cress green, cresson] n 1: any of several water-loving cresses 2: cresses that grow in clear ponds and streams

So, that means either sandwiches full of lake plants, or just sandwiches with some kind of yellowish-green filling. Maybe we could just make some sort of egg or chicken salad and add food coloring and call them watercress sandwiches. We can add lettuce, cucumbers and green peppers too.

I like this "cooler than Christmas" plan. Although I'm considering the whole Toronto trip cooler than Christmas anyway. I really can't wait!

You made me too curious about the whole watercress thing, so I found this:

Cucumber and Watercress Sandwich Appetizers

INGREDIENTS:
8 cups cucumber, peeled and finely chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 cup chopped fresh chives
2/3 cup butter, softened
20 slices whole wheat bread, crusts removed
1/3 cup mayonnaise
2 cups trimmed and coarsely chopped watercress

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS:
Place cucumber in a medium bowl. Mix in salt. Cover and set aside for approximately 30 minutes.
Mix ground black pepper, chives and butter into the bowl with the cucumber.
Spread whole wheat bread slices with mayonnaise. Top 10 slices with equal portions of the cucumber mixture, then with equal portions watercress. Cover with remaining 10 slices of bread. Cut into triangles and serve.

Can you buy watercress at the supermarket? I wouldn't know.

thank you.
I'll try this out before I inflict it on others.
I was re-reading "A Secret Garden" and they were describing tea.

And now that I know...there is some strange appeal to having a sandwich filled with lake plants.

Man, Ana's awesome. Isn't she awesome? And full of such good ideas.

Poor Becca. Christmas can be a tough time of year for adults, I agree. I miss our annual party, and spending all of the day before buying junk food and wrapping up little presents for all the guests. Two years in a row now we've had to go without that. ;_;

Ana's right--January will make up for Christmas. So just hang in there!

ohohohoho. I sense a week of girly talks and junk food!!!!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! ZEBRA COOOOOOOKIES! (actually, they were pretty good, even though they were just weirdly chipped toll house cookies.. i think it was the thought of eating real zebra that did it)

I also like the "cooler than christmas" idea, but I generally like spending money on people.......... so I might have little presents for you guys.

Eh, who cares about Christmas spirit when you've got End-of-Exams spirit! That's what I'm really looking forward to right now. 4:00 Wednesday, then it's all over.

I'm looking forward to our Basara conversation. It's a really important volume, I bet you'll like it:)

Don't worry too much, Becca. Most of us have steady jobs and can afford to get you a nice present. I would feel bad if eveyone got nice presents except for you.

*Hypothertical *

friend 1 says, "Yay! my Ugg boots!"
friend 2 says, "Yay my new mp3 player"
Becca gets a stick.

*end hypothetical*

If it makes you feel any better I didn't spend too much on your present.

Also, If you are going to spend $10-20 on ingredients, I suggest putting that money towards the pot. The pot is there for two reasons so people won't have to worry on what to get and they can put in the amount of money that they can put. No pressure.

This post is kind of old -- I made it before I knew about the whole pot thing. And I'm gonna try to come up with some money before Christmas to put in.

Feel free to give me a stick. I would love it and treasure it forever.

I may end up making some cookies anyway -- there are so many people coming over to my house on Christmas that there's a decent chance I'll have to make cookies for all of them anyway, with ingredients funded by my parents. If that's the case, I might as well make enough for my friends.
