Those who were droned had their souls removed. Those souls were in a large vat being stored. It seems the act of droning is a side effect, but the souls were being used, possibly as a power supply.

There may be a chance to regain your machine, as there have been previous chances to regain things. I'm sure you will have a chance in the future. That is, if the previous set up is resumed.
