Ten Things That Scare You

Ten things? Just ten? I'm scared all the time.

I'm fighting a war. I've almost died countless times, and that's not even the worst things that could happen. I could get trapped again - as a bug, or a rodent. I could get caught in my human body, and they could make me a Controller. The same things could happen to any of my friends.

Yeah. Losing one of them. Especially…well, Ax is my shorm. That's an Andalite term for, well, your best friend. And Rachel…well, she's Rachel. And the others, they've almost died for me, and I've almost died for them, and they're just…they're the best people I know.

They're the reason I'm still me. If I didn't have those connections, back when I couldn't morph anymore, I think…I think the hawk would have taken over. It almost did, once, early on, but then I went to see Rachel, and…she helped.

So that's another thing that frightens me. Losing myself, forever.

And then there are things the others can't really understand. I live as a hawk, now. At night, I'm not the king of the skies anymore; an owl might decide I look like a tasty treat. I was almost eaten by a bobcat, once, and then a raccoon.

I don't have to worry about breaking a wing now, at least - if I morph, that injury is gone once I'm back to normal.

Normal.

So, what's that make, six? Maybe more, depending on how you count them.

Okay.

I'm afraid of losing this war. I'm afraid of becoming as bad as the Yeerks while we fight it. I'm afraid of getting one of us killed somehow. I'm afraid of meeting a mother without a memory and grandparents on another planet.

I used to be afraid of water, but morphing a dolphin solved that.

I don't think the rest will be as easy.
