There were two things holding Franklin back from graduation.

First, you're pretty much aware of was his whole "vampire superiority" thing. Though, honestly, I think most of that was for show towards the end.

The second thing was a bit more complicated, but connected to the first. If Franklin loves something, he wants to protect it. Unfortunately, his idea of protection was to lock it away from everything. He never saw anything wrong with this. Until he saw how it was affecting Wanda and it finally clicked that he was hurting her rather than helping her.
