it's very pretty & lovely - and there's some wonderful nature (highly recommend St. Catherine's Hill, the Water Meadows & the marshes near the sports centre). And some great pubs (The Wykham Arms & The Mash Tun particularly). And the Cathedral's great too of course.
But socially & culturally it's pretty dead (despite the art college).
Politically it's very conservative (though technically Lib Dem - Mark Oaten. remember him?). There's some grim estates on the outskirts, but every town has those now, I guess.
I guess I just outgrew it. I am nostalgic for the fantastic countryside though. But life up north is far more groovy & happening. Your friend is right, it is a bit like York - only 1/4 the size, prettier but duller!
LOL, for the better part of a day, about 20 years ago. :-) Looking at the list of attractions I am sure we went to the cathedral (it was an architecture class field trip), and I can't beleieve that I would have missed the Royal Greenjackets Museum, but *nothing* is ringing any bells.
from what i remember it's quite nice. cathedral is quite groovy, the city itself is kinda olde-worlde mixed with stereotypical british high st in a southern version of york but nowhere near as classy type way.
