Character: Mihael "Mello" Keehl
Series/Fandom: Death Note
Original or Template Version: Original
Marked or Not Marked: Not Marked
Residence: Master Street, Corona Civica House, Lower Cove
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Sexuality: He's a little too preoccupied with being number one and contracting diabetes to focus on such trivial matters. But for all intents and purposes, bisexual.
Appearance: Mello is about 5'6" and 114 pounds, with blue eyes and a ridiculously girly haircut shoulder-length blond hair with bangs. He is fond of dressing in leather and almost always has a bar of chocolate in hand. Most often he can be found in black lace-up leather pants and a tight-fitting diamond-patterned zip-up vest, accompanied by boots, gloves, an assortment of chains, and rosary necklace.
Mello's most noticeable feature, however, is his face. A large scar stretches across the left half of it, extending from his forehead and across his cheek down to his neck and back. But possibly even more prominent to those who spend any extended amount of time in his presence is his unusual array of expressions, ranging from ridiculously comical to downright dangerous and sinister.
Personality: Mello is first and foremost driven by his desire to be the best. He is highly self-motivated and has incredible initiative, and unlike the other prominent Wammy orphans, possesses exceptional social skills. His intelligence and creativity combined with his drive to be number one make him quite the formidable opponent. Mello is a natural-born leader, and always has his eye on his goal, less concerned with more trivial matters like the actual title of L -- he wants to be the best in actions, not just in title. He is also rather emotional and can be brash and impulsive, and is willing to sacrifice morals to achieve his goals. Murder to him is merely a means to an end.
As his competitive nature may show, Mello has quite the inferiority complex. He is constantly trying to prove himself, and has the most fun when he is besting his opponent as the underdog. He isn't just about winning at all costs, though; he never intended for the death of Soichiro Yagami, and his ability to be compassionate shows when he learns of the death of his accomplice, Matt.
Abilities/Strengths: As one of the many orphans at Wammy's house in line for the title of L, the world's greatest detective, Mello has received an excellent, highly specialized education. His natural abilities of intelligence, initiative, creativity, emotional strength, and social skills have placed him second in line for the title, behind Near only. He is quite adept at logic and is able to come up with intricate plans to outsmart even some of his toughest opponents. His drive also has him constantly striving to improve himself, and he is quite daring, willing to take risks that others may not be willing to take, making him dangerous for anyone to go up against. He is talented at both detective work and criminal affairs, and is highly skilled in negotiation, surveillance, maneuvering vehicles, and handling a gun. He can also be a confident and impressive leader.
Weaknesses: Mello's emotional and impulsive nature is his greatest weakness. He recognizes that this is an advantage Near has over him; he lacks the calm, detached approach of the younger man. Mello's hatred of Near and his ambitious at-all-costs attitude tend to land him in morally dubious territory. More importantly, his impulsive nature puts him at risk of making reckless mistakes.
His inferiority complex, while motivating him to constantly strive to be the best, also proves to be an issue in that Mello will likely never be self-satisfied, forever bent on proving his abilities and his worth.
History: As one of the candidates to succeed L, Mello's real name, along with his past, were covered up upon his admittance to Wammy's House. While at the orphanage, he constantly studied and strove to surpass his greatest competition, Near. At the time of L's death, a decision had not been made as to which of the two would actually take the great detective's place; unwilling to work with his hated competition, Mello rejected the title of L in order to seek out his own path to surpassing both L and Near, leaving Wammy's House on December 5, 2004, just short of his fifteenth birthday.
Four years later, Mello resurfaced as a prominent figure in an American mafia organization, taking his first major action against Kira and Near by kidnapping the director of the NPA. He was able to successfully gain access to the death note in police custody by kidnapping the deputy director's daughter and arranging a carefully planned out trade. After tying up loose ends by having anyone in connection with their organization killed, along with most of the SPK working with Near, he used the death note as leverage to threaten the president of the United States, which incited an attack on his base by a US special forces squad under L's direction.
The death note's original owner, however -- the shinigami Sidoh -- returned for his notebook at that time, and Mello was made aware of the existence of shinigami. On top of this, he was unable to uncover the fake rules written in by Ryuk. Mello easily managed to manipulate the slow-witted Sidoh into working for his group in the attack, making victory against the special forces a simple task with Kal Snydar's trade for the shinigami eyes.
A second attack on his hideout by the Japanese task force proved much more successful, their whereabouts given away by boxes of chocolate delivered to their base. Caught off guard, with most of his group eliminated instantly by Kira, Mello was cornered, but narrowly escaped by detonating a set of bombs, blowing up his own base. Unfortunately, not only did he lose the notebook, his hideout, and allies, and was scarred by burns from the blast, but the Japanese task force was able to learn his true name via the power of the shinigami eyes.
Near, realizing that the SPK needed Mello's help, encouraged SPK member Halle Lidner -- already working as a secret informant for Mello -- to await contact from him. She passed on Near's message that he believed the new L to be Kira, and Mello returned the favor by escorting Lidner to SPK headquarters at gunpoint. For the first time since his departure from Wammy's, Mello and Near met face to face, and in payment for him returning his photograph, Mello informed Near of the shinigami and the fake rules.
Armed with new information, Mello confronted L directly by setting up a meeting between task force member Kanzo Mogi and the SPK, allowing himself to listen in on their conversations without placing himself physically at risk, and placing Near in a favorable situation to gain information about Kira from the members of the Japanese task force. After furthering his own investigation, Near again contacted Mello to inform him of the task members' whereabouts.
Mello, having been working alone, contacted the third Wammy candidate for the title of L, Matt, and together they monitored the task members, spying on both Misa Amane and the Japanese task force headquarters. Mello quickly came to the conclusion that Near had already reached -- that L/Kira was Light Yagami -- and when the task force returned to Japan, he and Matt followed close behind.
Informed once more of Near's plans by Lidner, Mello realized that in order to catch Kira he would have to take desperate actions, and on January 26, 2010, with Matt acting as cover, Mello kidnapped Kira spokeswoman Kiyomi Takada. Matt's getaway was thwarted by Takada's bodyguards, and he was shot mercilessly, the news of his death televised and viewed by Mello. Mello escaped with Takada, but overlooked her possessing a page from the death note. His name was written on the page by Takada, and he died at the wheel of the truck he used to transport her. Soon after, Takada was manipulated by the power of the death note to kill herself, burning everything around her, including the truck with Mello's body in it.
Mello also wrote the account of L's victory over the twisted serial killer Beyond Birthday, the story being one of three related directly to him by L.
