To say that I missed this city would be something of an exaggeration; I can say with all honesty that people de-aging into small children, demons and velociraptors chasing me through the streets, mysterious parties in absurd haunted mansions, and weird mental influences that even extend through computer networks are all irritations I could safely ( Read more... )

Phenomenal behavior isn't listed as any objectives.

If where you come from can compete with all that, I have to say I'm pretty impressed.

This city isn't so much a vacation for me as a vacation for my expectations of the world, where at least when things are bizarre and inexplicable they won't have any sort of symbolic importance I'm supposed to understand.

People de-age?

If I remember correctly, someone in town has a pet velociraptor, so you may not be missing out entirely - except for the part of the experience that involves being cornered in a coffin hotel, rescued by an okama with a chainsaw, and running for your life to the train station. Not the sort of thing that falls under the usual definition of 'tourist trap,' although obviously someone using a bad dictionary could find ways for the term to make sense.

On the other hand, in such a place it's possible to meet all sorts of unexpected people and learn about a variety of subjects most people would find unbelievable and nonsensical, such as time travel.

I suppose. At least in Desai, nobody talks about fractured time planes, or TPDs, or says 'Classified Information!' far too cutely for me to stay irritated, but really, hopping around in blue boxes is still a strain to any sort of credulity.
