What is the meaning of life?  I've always found that to be an irrelevant question.  The basic conditions of life are different for all people, and so you would get a different answer depending on who you asked.  A normal high school student would tell you one thing, whereas someone living in a different time, like the future, would have an answer

I'm going to leave aside any questions I have about randomly finding myself in a strange place and stick to the practical - is yen the local currency here, and if not, is there somewhere I can go to change my money?

Yen? You're from Japan then? You can go to the travel agency located at the center of the city to exchange your currency. They take the American dollar here for some odd reason.
