Tutorial #1--Audrey Hepburn

Sep 30, 2006 14:11

hi! So there were a few requests for some tutorials, and so I thought I'd whip one up. This seemed to be a pretty popular icon so for my first tut I shall do Audrey Hepburn, and try and make it understandable for everyone. It's easy.

Go from This To:

I use PS CS2 although methinks it's surely translateable:)
Difficulty Level: Easy

Step 1
First you take the larger photo of Audrey:

and crop it however you want it, then resize the image to 100x100. I did just the top part of her head because the background above it is white, which is ideal for the texture that i use later.

Step 2
Once I have it cropped how I like it, I use a nifty idea courtesy of letsbebad on making black and white icons nice and contrasted. A lot of times B&W pictures look really grayscale, or shiny, or they can be really light. For the audrey icon,I thought it could use a little more contrast, so did the following:

Layer > New adjustment layer > brightness/contrast, and set the brightness to -13 and the contrast to +19. Then i merged the two layers.

This makes it more crisp and less flat. (Note: you may have to use different settings on the brightness/contrast or if it's really dark to begin with, duplicate the base first and set it to screen and play around with the opacity--but it depends on the image you use)

Step 3
The first thing I did before jumping to the next step was make sure my Audrey image wasn't "grayscale". What it means if an image is grayscale is, you can't use color on it, it turns all color layers to B&W. So I went to Image > Mode > RGB Color.

Step 4
Next I used an icon texture from tre-xture (in this case i used that one with the window picture on it). I copied it and pasted it as a new layer onto Audrey and set this layer to multiply. I had to rotate the texture because the window blocked Audrey's face, so i did:

Edit > Transform > Flip vertical

Step 5
Now I wanted to erase the texture that was covering Audrey's face so we could see it was black and white and not green. I chose a soft round eraser brush and erased where the texture covered her face. So now, I can see b&w Audrey with some color around her.

Step 6
Duplicate the Audrey base (which is the merged bottom layer) and set this layer to soft light and moved it slightly to the left (or you can move it wherever you want), and then I erased the part of that layer that was overlapping.

Step 7
TEXT. i used "courier" font in a smaller size. you can use text if you want, or not, and just play around with it. And then, that's it, you're DONE!

So, emm, i hope this was helpful to at least someone, ha ha. I wanted to do an easy one as my first one. Please let me know if it made sense, and if you decide to try it out, feel free to share what you came up with!
