normally i like to hide my musical tastes because i'm ashamed of them. but here goes
--the obvious--
1. Beach Boys - Pet Sounds. Ok, Rolling Stone gives it no. 2. I give it no.1. And everyone not a slave to rolling stone says "what, beach boys? aren't they responsible for crap like surfin' usa? Whatever...." No. Seriously. Greatest album of all time.
2. Pink Floyd - Dark side of the moon. Fine, i realize I'm selling out to the majority again. And to be honest, the album gives me an odd uncomfortable flashbacky feeling upon recent listenings. But i'm still giving it no.2.
--the obvious getting it on albums--
3. Massive Attack - Mezzanine. Dang it i wish i wouldn't have let my ex on to this secret. Almost ruined it for me. Anyways, yes. I guess no surprise. You can NEVER go wrong with this album. Eh... at least it's not as obvious as Sade.
4. The Verve - Urban Hymns. Hahaha, didn't let this secret out. No, it's not just bittersweet symphony. And it's not just because my first romantic experience was soundtracked by this album (seriously, it wasn't that memorable). It just has this slidey guitar thing that's... well... slidey. good for sliding around.
--formative in my youth--
5. Tori Amos - Boys for Pele. Word's can't even describe. Total Genius. Changed my life, for better or worse i'm not sure.
6. Hole - Live Thru This. Ok, so i actually didn't catch on to the whole grunge thing until like way after Kurt Cobain died. And i mostly thought of grunge as being for heroin addicts. And i mostly thought of girls who liked Hole as being fat, wearing too much eyeliner, and being depressed. And i still don't like grunge.
--forget the categories--
7. Madonna - Confessions On A Dancefloor. I decided to limit myself to one Madge album. And i thought picking the Immaculate Collection was too much of a cop-out.
8. Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple
9. Color Me Badd - C.M.B. Shup. I told you my taste in music is embarrassing. I either had to list this or Paris Hilton's album.
10. Jane's Addiction - They were so short lived, can't i just lump all their works as one album? Ok, I'll say Nothing's Shocking. Because you can see perry farrell's weiner in the album artwork. Jane's is why I can still safely say grunge sucked. LA, hedonism, heroin chic, shoplifting, 3somes, and making it ok for white boys to wear dreads. (ok, so perry also gave us satellite party, i'll forgive him this once.)
11. honorable mention Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine. Without this album, i would never have finished my thesis.
Hmmm... I feel this list is so not representative of me or my tatses in music. Or even what i want you to think they are. My favorites are songs not albums. I'm my father's daughter..... So a quick stab at songs...
1. Brother's Johnson - Strawberry Letter 23. An ex once tried to argue with me about this being my favorite song. Should have dumped him then.
2. Solomon Burke - Cry to Me. Just listening to this song is orgasmic. oh yeah, nobody puts baby in the corner.
3. Tommy James and the Shondells - Crystal Blue Persuasion. I think i once listened to this song for a week straight one summer
4. Procol Harem - Whiter Shade of Pale. Ugh, i swear i have some songs on the list made in this century....
5. Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight... mmmmmm..... it's the drums.
6. Dan Hartman - I Can Dream About You... mmm... also the drums. Special place in my heart because it's probably my first music memory. I remember the blue Streets of Fire single vinyl sheath. and being mesmerized by the needle spinning on it. so i nudged the needle, scratching the record. my dad was uber pissed. but I loved the song then and still do. It might be tied for earliest with Like a Virgin and Hey Mickey. But i still like this song more.
7. Janet Jackson - Escapade. This song wouldn't be on the list at all except for VERY VERY VERY important attached memories. Takes me back to a good time. crap. i'm gonna get teary about it.
8. Simple Minds - Alive and Kicking. Exemplary of my Breakfast Club genre love. though i don't think this was in breakfast club, was it?
9. Garth Brooks - Good Ride Cowboy. There really should be more country in these lists considering what a big part of my life it was/is. Crap i'm gonna get sad. maybe i'm just forcing this on the list..... though this song was the finale of my thesis.
10. Sammy Johns - Chevy Van. hahahah, just kidding. i think.
10. Snow - Informer. also just kidding. i think. though i like to have it on my ipod at all times just to impress people with my depravity.
10. Ravel's Bolero. oh man, i'm having a hard time taking this seriously sort of.......
10. Grandmaster Flash - White Lines. Oh i give up. I'll be serious about that one.
10. No wait, for reals this time i mean this one. George Harrison - My Sweet Lord.
