I'd say fall or spring, too. June would be fine, but don't do July. It's just-- everyone smells like a gym sock and rot.

I have vacationed in NYC in basically all seasons. Summer is all sticky and hot, but still delightful if that's the only time you have off.

I love NYC in the summer - I missed it terribly when I was in SF, where it never gets really warm. I think July 4th is really a fun time- fireworks all over for USA independence! And you can go to the beach and go swimming!! If you are not generally a warm weather lovin' person, then yeah, early June is better, but it's definitely unpredictable. One summer the only 100 degree days we had were in May.
