dear god, I've become a hippy

So, as mentioned, I recently changed my diet a little. However, I soon realised a couple of things:

1. I don't like cooking
2. I really don't like tofu.

Looking at "easy, honest!" tofu cooking instructions just about drove me nuts.. soak it? squeeze it out? This is not simple food. Plus, you know, by default tofu is kinda disgusting.. unless ( Read more... )

(I find tofu to be pretty filthy to eat, too. It doesn't seem to be food to me.)

I can only assume it delivers a dose of smugness or some such that I just don't know how to appreciate.

A good friend of mine was vegetarian for years. I asked him if he felt better while he was, and he said "Not noticeably, but I felt a lot more righteous". That'll be the tofu smugness at work.

well, exactly.

The only time I've had tofu & really liked it was the Udon noodles from Midnight... but then I realised that I just liked it because:

a) it was fried, so it had hardness, and none of the icky slime texture, and

b) the sweet thai chilli sauce they put on it

So, I went out and bought the sauce by itself, and have been happy since (it goes with everything)

"I made it myself" sweet thai chilli sauce is amazing++ and also very easy to make.

(Chopped chillis + vinegar + sugar in pot, heated until syrupy. I think. There might also be salt in there.)

Raw food is throughly delicious, and makes you feel great. The challenge I have had with it is the amount of time dedicated to shopping for and preparing food. And in the winter, the desire for warm, filling foods.

[I quite like tofu, but won't bother attempting to sell it to you.]

Raw is delicious, if your liver and kidneys and internal flora can tolerate all the fruit and vegetable toxins they give you. That's a downside compared to cooked foods. Additionally, cooking converts starches to sugars in a certain chemical reaction (I forget the name), which is why some veggies turn brown when sauteed.

If you can handle the toxins, you get the benefit of more vitamins by eating raw. Its just not the only answer.

Soy is toxic theheretic January 13 2008, 09:16:29 UTC
Tofu is also mildly toxic. Soy beans, which tofu is made from, contain an endocrine disrupter which mimics estrogen. This doesn't sound so bad until you learn what getting estrogen in your system does. For males, this leads to some reproductive problems, and eventually cancer. In females this is one of the possible causes of ovarian and cervical cancer (not the now-well-known viral cause). It also messes with your brain chemistry and results in some behavioral problems ( ... )

Interestingly, I used soy milk on my breakfast for about two weeks.. until my body gagged, and just wouldn't take it any more. That surprised me, but maybe it was picking up on that toxicity you talk of ( ... )

Part of why you feel better without industrial farm meat is you're no longer getting massive doses of the chemicals crammed into the animals to keep them alive in those conditions, mainly growth hormones, antibiotics, and various other chemicals which unfortunately stays in the meat, milk, and eggs when it gets to you. You're not supposed to be full of that, thus it makes you feel crappy if you eat it. Its not a surprise, and if Australias FDA is like the USA's, well I know they take bribes, organize the laws to ignore the crimes, and look the other way "for the public good". I can't afford organic meat as much as I'd like, but I am much less squicked out when I eat it than I am with the industrial meat. The EPA says you should avoid any processed meats, any nitrated meats (as the nitrates are powerful toxins, like eating formaldehyde), and the US EPA used to list some 50 known endocrine disrupters. One of the nasty and common ones is called Plasticine, which makes plastics flexible/durable. Its very commonly used in soda bottles, ( ... )

Hehe.. the drought here isn't a surprise, no. It's well talked about (by you, me, everyone else).

Water clarity/health is an issue anywhere, but particularly big cities.. and yeah, here too. Not keen on buying bottled water (doesn't seem to be any benefit to it), but filtration is.. complicated. Not any easy answers. Only drink coke? Heh.
