The detritus of Catholicism

Mar 30, 2008 14:58

[this post is primarily aimed at Catholics & ex-Catholics, but if you're not and you feel a resonance, hey, that's cool too, just go with it, heal away]

Catholicism is a very interesting religion. It is an immensely powerful organisation with an incredibly flat hierarchy (only 5 layers from Pope to you). It's run from the Vatican, one of very few Read more... )

Sorry, no can do.

lj-cut = hidden from Google, and it's more important that this stuff is world-findable than whether or not the handful of people on my friend's list read it or not. I'm sorry about the inconvenience to your friends page. You are, of course, welcome to take me off it, if that's a more pleasant solution.

oh, I completely agree.

and there is a difference (that I didn't make very clear) between "official creed" (as linked), and "what gets handed down by all the people in the mix - priests, nuns, bishops, teachers and so on".

Eg, guilt. Where does that all come from? Is it official (catechism) teaching? In social terminology, I'd say it was more of a cultural teaching than doctrinal. And that, I suspect is where a lot of the problems come from.

Officially, most of this crap (technical term) doesn't exist, and certainly doesn't come from the doctrinal teachings, the "official word of the Catholic church". And yet, it's still there. It's passed on - like cultural teachings in any other organisation (good example here, and with humans here ( ... )

I have to chuckle a bit whenever people start to debate "official" Catholic teachings because when I was taking catechism classes in college, I learned that the Church had very different wordings for different styles of masses tailored to whatever particular audience. (At that time, I believe there were three types of wordings for approved masses.) At one confirmation, on a military base, all the would-be Catholics were told about unquestioning obedience to Papal authority; etc. At another confirmation, at a completely different Catholic church, the heart and conscience were emphasized as authority ( ... )

Ok.. so, after some consideration I realize that the degree of EFT, Tap Therapy, Psychotherapy, rehabilitation, stress defusion, etc. one may need after their particular Religious upbringing has so much to do with how "official" (upheld) it was in & by their Family, how dedicated the individual was/is & what the undercurrents of their particular belief systems were/are ( ... )

Ahh, well that's VERY interesting. The subtleties in how guilt is used in different denominations/sects.

Ultimately it's all self-destructive though.

.. and thank you for those new thought patterns. I just tapped them all in. Awesome.
