Character

Name: Ranma Saotome
Fandom: Ranma 1/2
Gender: ALL MALE. AND DON'T YOU BELIEVE OTHERWISE. But also a girl. /punched
Age: 16
Time Period:
Wing Color: Black and Red.
History: Here.

Personality:
When it comes to first impressions, Ranma can immediately come off as a self-centered, egotistical type of individual with little respect or care for anyone other than himself. In fact, on first meeting, one might be prone to want to punch him right in the face many, many times just because he tends to be a bit of a smart alec with no respect. While it may appear to be the case in some scenarios, there is actually a bit more to Ranma than what meets the eye.

Quick to lash out and normally unforgiving as to whom he offends, he severely lacks any proper social skills due to his poor upbringing. Unfortunately, his father never really set any guidelines on how to properly behave around others since he was mostly focused on training Ranma in martial arts. In fact, one could even go as far to say that he was an extremely bad example for Ranma, gloating and behaving just as obnoxiously as he tends to act today. This often means that he isn't good when it comes to losing. All that pride tends to make it hard for him to swallow when he's been overthrown by an opponent. Yes, he's a terrible loser, but it's often that confidence that later makes him train harder so that he can go back and win like he wants to. Nevertheless, Ranma is a bold and lively person who is not afraid to speak his mind openly, regardless of the person. This may or may not often bring him into a whirlwind of trouble, but in some cases this is precisely the sort of response he tends to hope for.

This behavior tends to come out the most when around his family, especially Akane. Whether or not he does it intentionally or without realizing, Ranma tends to insult the people around him on a regular basis, taunting them on their perceived flaws. Akane in particular tends to receive the bulk of his harassment due to their constant disagreements and embarrassing encounters. This normally tends to reflect on a number of things whether in regards to her appearance (unsexy), cooking experience (poisonous), or general demeanor (violent tomboy). With his smart mouth and her short temper, things tend to get heated quite often between these two.

However, that’s not to say he is completely self-centered. While Ranma does have a crude way of expressing his feelings that is not to say he doesn’t have them, he just has an odd way of showing it. There’s no doubt about it that he is indeed verbally challenged when it comes to expressing his emotions, yet it’s his actions that normally tend to speak the loudest for him in certain situations. On countless occasions he has rescued each and every single one of his fiancés, especially Akane. When faced with a troubling situation, he can usually become a bit impulsive at times, acting on whim without thoroughly thinking the strategy through. Though his motives are often honorable, that is not to say that his actions are well thought out or reasonable.

Though he tends to point out the flaws in everyone else, it is without question that Ranma has some pretty high strung problems himself. Socially retarded and insensitive, he tends to lash out the most when back into a corner that beckons for him to admit his true feelings. He has trouble acknowledging that he does care and is rather incapable about showing it, whether it’s because he feels it’s a sign of weakness or just his own stubborn ignorance to it. Very seldom does he ever drop his walls to reveal a kinder side of him. When it does, this normally only lasts for a few minutes, then quickly goes right back up again after everyone else gets a whiff of him being sentimental-like his father or his father’s friend, Soun. Any sign of him showing progress of a developing relationship with his proposed fiance is often placed under constant surveillance and scrutiny. Perhaps it's the pressure placed on him by everyone that often makes it so difficult for him to truly assess his feelings.

Overall, Ranma is a rather blunt and perhaps complex character who can often leave people baffled or offended when in his presence. Yet when given the opportunity to prove his worth, he still seems to have his heart in the right place and is actually a relatively decent guy.

Strengths:

Physical

  • As the sole heir to the Anything Goes Martial Arts, Ranma has quite a number of strengths that allows him to oversee many of his opponents. He knows a wide range of abilities and attacks that can easily take down some of the toughest martial artists known across the world. He possess a phenomenal amount of super strength, speed, and ability to use ki manipulation/projection abilities. As an expert martial artist, he also has heightened senses and is capable of copying techniques on a whim, sometimes while in mid-battle.

  • Oh, and there's also the fact that he can change his gender with cold water, but I'm sure he'll tell you that's not a curse but a burden of hell. However, this ability tends to have its benefits in more than a few situations. It's allowed him to sneak into palaces catered to women only, fool his friends into believing he was some helpless girl, and (while unintentionally) can often fool his opponents and throw them off guard. Kuno is probably a good example. Now this doesn't mean he likes knowing he can become a girl, but since he's stuck with the curse, he does take advantage of it from time to time when the situation calls for it. Besides, it's not everyday you can camouflage yourself by just throwing cold water on your body.

  • Musabetsu Kakutou Ryuu or The Anything Goes Martial Arts teaches him to be expected and prepared to do almost anything in order to triumph in battle, regardless of what challenges, tricks, embarrassing moments, or even cheating is involved. The great thing about Anything-Goes is that it's true to it's name-anything goes. It is a form of arts that makes him physically able to adapt to any fighting style thanks to the versatility of this form of combat.

A few abilities that are perhaps some of his most noteworthy ones are:

Moko Takabisha or Pride of the Fierce Tiger - This ability is a ki-blast based on his confidence and pride level. It is a modified version of Shi-Shi Hokodan. This was used to counter Ryoga's ability which was fueled by depression. This is also another example for why Ranma's confidence is one of his most powerful strengths.

Kachu Tenshin Amaguriken or Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire - This is perhaps one of his most noteworthy moves given how versatile it can be used in battle. The ability gets its name because of how the technique is taught by Cologne. Ranma had to learn how to pull chestnuts from an open fire as quickly as possible without burning his hand. This lesson allowed him to develop quick movement with his hands and able to throw a number of powerful blows with his fists in less than a second.

Hiryu Shoten Ha or Dragon's Heaven Blast - This ability was taught to him by Cologne in order to overthrow Happosai's attack. In order to do this Ranma removes all of his inner most emotions to create an 'icey soul' and lowers his temperature dramatically. Once this is done, he then leads his opponents into a spiral to mix the heat and cold together (the heat being battle auras ranging from anger to lust) thus creating a tornado effect and eventually draws a punch combined with all these elements.

Hiryu Korin Dan or Dragon's Descending Crashing Wave - This is a different variation of Hiryu Shoten Ha used against an encounter with Herb. This time he uses the tornado formation to shoot him through the air, then uses a powerful energy of ki to charge downward onto his opponent.

There are many other variations of these abilities that he also possess. The Anything-Goes Martial Arts can range from anywhere to calligraphy, gymnastics, and ... even stealing. This is Genma's fault. Trust me.

    Mental/Emotional
  • He's tremendously confident to the point where it borderlines arrogance. No, actually, it is arrogance, but this is very beneficial for him. Being able to always feel as though he can topple his opponents usually allows him to focus without any emotional interruptions such as fear or doubts. This is needed when encountering people who are much strong than him, because it's that need to want to succeed that often pushes him beyond his limit and even create different variations of his moves in order to win. When he falls off his horse, he's quick to get back on it again. Ranma never gives up and he will stubbornly figure it out whether it takes a minute or a year.

He knows he can do it and if he puts his mind to it he usually can. This confidence is also very important for one of his ki-based attacks. Where Ryoga uses his depression and sadness to channel his energy, Ranma uses his confidence to counter the attack. And this boy has so much of it that naturally it overthrows the depressed piglet's ability. Unfortunately, being this confident is a double-edged sword, but it's probably well worth it in the long run.

    Weaknesses:

    Physical
  • His curse. It is by far the biggest weakness he possesses physically. During a training session at the Juseyenko Springs, Ranma and Genma ignored the warnings and trained on the poles over the cursed springs. Ranma kicked his father into Shonmaoniichuan/"Spring of 'Drowned' Panda" and was shocked when a gigantic Panda shot out and kicked him into ... Nyannichuan ... otherwise known as Spring of Drowned Girl. This means that when hit with cold water, Ranma's MASCULINE AMAZINGNESS male body suddenly transforms into holy crap those are a nice set of- female body. This is a curse not only because people in Japan seem to love throwing cold water at him at random at any damn time, but also because it physically makes him weaker and unable to properly perform certain attacks to its fullest potential. He can still do a wide range of martial arts techniques, but not quite as powerful as he can when a male. Sad but true, Ranma needs to be a male if he goes into battle, otherwise his opponents can easily take him down while in his cursed form.

It also tends to be a bit of a nuisance for him and can easily distract him if he's put in situations where his female assets are showing or worst. Leave it to Happosai to make a man lose concentration when he's without his shirt or something else perverted along those lines. There's also the fact that trying to keep it secret is perhaps one of his hardest accomplishments. Thankfully there are those that are too stupid to understand that he has this curse, but then there are others who he desperately works hard to keep secret from. Unfortunately, water loves him.

    Mental/Emotional
  • Cats. CATS. HE HATES FREAKING CATS. This is due to a stupid father who decided that his son needed to learn a technique by throwing him into a pit of starving cats with meat attached to him as a child. Unfortunately, only an idiot would teach someone this technique and of course his father fit the bill. He didn't do it just once, mind you, but several times with different assortment of meats attached to the poor boy's body. The event was so traumatizing for him that Ranma developed a massive fear of cats. Yes, the fearless and cocky martial artists able to bring down some of the most strongest people in the known world ... is afraid of cats.

If around cats for too long, however, this normally puts him into an induced psycosis state of Neko Ken or Cat Fists where he acts and believes himself to be a cat. In a way, I guess it's more of a mental strength and weakness simply because when his mind goes into this state, he's extremely powerful. Shredding things with his fingers, clawing, spitting, and just overall a beastly .. human. Surprisingly enough, only Akane is able to calm him when this happens.
  • Girls. Always the girls. For a guy with so many fiancés, it's probably a bit of a surprise to learn that he has a weakness when it comes to dealing girls and not in the good way. He can't understand them, doesn't get them, and while he knows what words to use when he wants something, that isn't to say he's a regular charmer. Ranma is a jackass. A huge jackass. Especially with girls. Not always but he does tend to treat them very poorly from time to time. Akane is usually the main target for this which often leads to some pretty nasty fights. He's a bit of an arrogant prick so he can often say things that are terribly uncalled for. This is why he has tremendous trouble with girls.

With Akane, he frequently teases and insults her ranging from her appearance to her terrible cooking. This leads to fighting and usually a punch or two thrown his way ... which he deserves. It isn't that he finds them to be inferior or that he's above them (well sometimes it might seem that way), it's just that he's stupid with girls. He's trying, though! If life with the Tendo's and having fiancés has taught him anything is how to treat women better and how to better express his feelings toward others. It's a slow, grueling process but there is hope for this boy!

  • You know being a complete arrogant asshole isn't always the best trait to have. While his confidence is certainly strong point (especially when using a certain ability), it's also his greatest weakness. Too often has Ranma went into encounters thinking he could handle it only to find himself beaten to a pulp. This makes him a terrible, terrible sore loser and hates being defeated by others. He detests it to the point that it actually puts him in a bitter and miserable mood. It's that same misery that often pushes him to train harder and try to find ways around or overpower it. But perhaps losing is good for him since it always allows him to learn new moves and strategies thus making him even stronger against others. Again, his arrogance is a double-edged sword.

    First Person:
Damn it! What has Pop got me into now?

IF THIS IS ANOTHER ONE OF YOUR TRAINING ROUTINES, YOU BETTER AT LEAST EXPLAIN THIS TO ME FIRST, DIRTY OLD MAN!

Oh great, this is just what I need. Another ridiculous situation no doubt schemed by my Pop. Oh well, I guess it can’t be any worse than being stuck at home forced to eat Akane’s poison. On the other hand, this could very well be the handiwork of her doing. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the result of me eating her latest cuisine. I bet I just died and gone to heaven. It was only a matter of time till that would happen. Heh, that ought to teach her to stay out of the kitchen.

Anyway, I doubt it's any of that. Whatever this is, I got to find a way out of here and fast! I don’t have time for this sort of thing. I have better things to do with my time than to play a dumb game like hiking and camping adventures.

So, I've got a question. Why do I suddenly have a pair of wings? Isn't that a little girly? These things are practically ATTACHED TO MY SKIN! I don't recall agreeing to any of this! When I find the person responsible for this, you're so gonna get it man. I want these wings off my back right now! I've got enough problems with stupid deformations...

Yo, can anyone see me out there? If nobody can answer my first question, how about someone tell me how to get back home?

    Third Person:

This was quite possibly the worst camping trip he had ever taken. No, actually he wasn't even sure when he agreed to go on this trip. When did he ever? He never even recalled leaving the house let alone his bed to attend this unwanted training session. All he knew was that somewhere along the way, he found himself lost in the woods walking aimlessly in just about any direction. Memory couldn't place how or why he got here, but he was almost positive this had something to do with his father. How could it not? Only he would devise a plan that lead to him being lost in the woods without him knowing.

"Stupid old man..." Ranma mumbled to himself while glaring daggers at just about everything he came across. Not even the trees were safe from his anger or the rock he suddenly kicked into the distance. "Think he's gonna outsmart me by leaving me out here in the woods. He's got another thing comin'!" Being stranded out in the woods wasn’t his idea of training. In fact, it could not have come at a worst time. No food, no water, and no extra set of clothing at all. All he was left with was the last few memories he had of home before waking up surrounded by mountains, wildlife, and a forest setting. It wasn’t that he was bothered by the setting, that wasn’t exactly unfamiliar territory for him. It was the fact that he didn’t have a clue where he was in the world or if he was even in Japan anymore. Knowing his father, he could very well be in some strange part of China or worst. All he needed was some kind of answer that would clue him in on where exactly he was.

A sudden sharp pain had him stop in his tracks and clench his jaw. As if he wasn't angry enough, there was also that one, problematic thing he discovered upon waking up. The one thing that confused him most of all and felt too much like an additional curse. Whirling around while trying to reach behind his back, Ranma gave a hard jerk at the fluttering wing only to scream in agony from pain as it shot through his spine. It was impossible to believe at first but now he was suddenly aware that these additional appendages were part of his body now.

"AND JUST WHAT THE HELL ARE THESE?!" He shouted. Didn't he have enough problems as is? Ranma growled and balled his hand into a fist, muttering a few more words incoherent to anyone around before speaking a little more clearly. "I swear when I find the person responsible for this... this isn't my idea of a joke!"

Turning forward again, Ranma shouted a proclamation that he hoped his father could hear, one that he hoped would reach the ears of those responsible for this situation and stirred the birds from their trees. "YOU'RE NOT GONNA HEAR THE END OF THIS, POPS! DO YOU HEAR ME?!
