Hier, j'ai conduit à Washington D.C. pour passer le TEF (test d'evaluation de francais) à 9h du matin. Le test durait deux heures et demie, et je pense que j'en suis bien sorti. J'ai passé cet examen parce que c'est nécessaire de le passer pour étudier en France

Haha yeah I guess I didn't think about the acronym I generated with my translation. I had heard that it was the only test I could take but apparently there were a couple others that I could have taken. Ummm...I am pretty sure that you did not translate that yourself being the English makes no sense in many places...
("it seems to be useless to apply to American universities is I want to study in France." for example.)

But anywho, why would you have to "stop your studies" for a year? Maybe this another translation confusion. But still, why?

No I translated it myself and it made sense in my head when I did it. Basically that first one is supposed to be IF I want to study in France. If I apply to grad schools in France I won't know until June whether I got in, and if I don't get accepted to them it will be too late to go anywhere else so that's why I'd be forced to take a year off.

I know a few graduate students who took a year off in between undergrad. and graduate school just to do research. Some people don't remember to apply to grad. school in time, and so they have to wait until the next round. It seems like you could get hired as a Research Assistant in a lab @ UNC or Duke or something (I'd actually suggest Duke, if you could swing it, private schools tend to pay better than public schools on these things), or even at another institution somewhere in the U.S.
