It is referring to different regional dialects of American English. Talking to people from Kentucky, Illinois, New Hampshire, Alabama, Texas, and Washington will be completely different experiences, and many of them will use words differently than others. For that matter, some words simply don't appear in some regions of the country that are common place in others. Example:

In Michigan, one rarely, if ever, hears someone use the term "y'all" unless in a humorous fashion. However, in Kentucky, "y'all" is common place. Furthermore, in eastern Kentucky, "y'all" is singular, and functionally replaces the term "you", where as "all y'all" is plural, and is used to refer to a group of people.

And now you have a clearer idea of just how strange this place is.

All of this I already knew. What I don't know are the characteristics of each specific dialect listed there. Could you explain that?

Also, while we're at it - what would be my chances of chatching you on the phone next week?

First of all I have to thank you. You're the only one who's said anything that makes any sort of sense about this :) I also feel obliged to thank you for posting it here. Most people wouldn't have bothered ( ... )
